It is not unusual for us to come down to the wire with no set names for our babies, but usually by now we have a list we are working on whittling down. By the time of delivery we are generally down to one or two. For some reason this time we do not even have a list on which we are working, and I am starting to feel anxious about it. In the past it has been a discussion over 40 weeks, and we are already down to 20!
We've had two actual discussions and I think we have a girl name chosen, but we are really stuck when it comes to boy names. We have a three-syllable OT prophet theme going with boys and though that was not by design, it could be fun to continue that. It doesn't have to be three-syllable, but it should be multiple as dh does not care for single-syllable names (for first or middle) or names that are often shortened to one-syllable (William, Joseph, Michael, etc.). Three of our four have three-syllable first with two-syllable middle. The two-syllable first has a three-syllable middle. First names have all been 5 or 6 letters long, and we seem to lean toward that length.
I really like Micah for a boy, but dh is afraid he would be called Mike (I do not foresee that happening, but he doesn't like Mike). Dh kind of likes Nehemiah, but I just cannot see myself calling that out every time he gets in trouble. Isaac is out for a multitude of reasons. Jacob, Caleb, Jonah, Joel, Josiah, Joshua, Moses, Aaron, Matthew, Patrick, Francis, Gregory, and Joseph have all been ruled out. Dh prefers names to not begin with the same letter, so no As, Cs, Es, Is, Bs, or Ks. We try to do a saint/biblical name for the first name and use family names, or variations of, for middle names. We like names that are not too common, but that are not unusual. No creative spelling or hyphenation.
I am going to keep Micah on my list because dh has in the past liked a name later on that he did not like when initially suggested. The name just feels right to me. I also like Blaise, but we already have a B name.
Dh has always liked Gavin, and though I like it it seems too trendy and I just cannot see a child of ours named that.
So, something shortish, not too common but not "out there," saintly or biblical...GO!
ETA: We are both Western European mixes, so no strong ethnic ties. Heavy on the German, but many of those names sound so...heavy.

Malachi sounds a lot like Micah, but 3 syllables.
Nathaniel.

Nathaniel I like, but it could be shortened to Nathan, so I can't see dh going for that one. He doesn't like names that are likely to be shortened...I think I need to find out If there is a reason for that.
I like Malachi!

Ooh, I like Malachi! We have a Noah, so of course I love that name. Nathaniel (would be New Testament)? Jeremiah?

Sorry Joel is ruled out -- we have a Joel. He is never, ever, ever, ever "Joe." As he will tell you.
Gavin is a nice name -- Welsh? I can't remember. It's not that trendy; growing up, my dad had a law partner whose name was Gavin, so it's not one of those come-lately kind of names, though it may be seeing a resurgence in popularity. What about Gavin with an OT prophet middle name? "Gavin Malachi" . . .
We have done your same pattern, with OT names and family middle names. though except for our Joel, all the first names are actually family names, too -- our Joel is Joel Matthews (for my mother's side of the family), for example. I also have a Benjamin Brooks, whose name came right off a family headstone, but it *sounds* like I took a Biblical name and paired it with a family name! But we've played with that pattern -- actually our first child has a family first name (Ada, after my great-grandmother), and a middle/saint's name that we just chose (Katharine). So you can invert your pattern and still have it going on, if you know what I mean.
Good luck with your discernment.
Sally

We don't like names shortened either, but haven't had a problem with our boys, Samuel and Joseph. Samuel's baseball coach and scout leader call him Sam, which he doesn't mind, but no one else does. Of course, depending on your extended family, you may have more trouble than we did, but since we have been consistent in using full names, everyone has followed suit.

Names may or may not be shortened. I've found it depends on the child (my Matthew is still Matthew at least 50% of the time but he doesn't object to Matt either) And even names you wouldn't think could be shortened are. Nehemiah I could see being called "knee" or "miah".. even though they're not a typical nickname. My sister used Riley thinking it wouldn't be shortened.. and even she calls him "Ri".
If you pick a name you love and use it, other people will too.. except maybe family.. and if that's the problem, they may find ways to shorten any name.
We have an Elisabeth.. and she's Elisabeth or Ellie (her preference).. never called any of the other nicknames that we had to work through when picking the name. We loved the name but not most of the nicknames.. and we haven't had any problems.
What about Benedict? Gabriel? Simon? Josiah? Matthias? Gideon?

I found out dh doesn't want a J name as his brother's family are all Js. Amazing how many biblical names that eliminates! So far Micah and Malachi are my favorites.
Another dh rule I forgot to mention (there are starting to be a lot of those ) is that the name cannot already be claimed by close irl friends or by family through second cousins. I have 49 first cousins, most of which have families of 3 or more, and many of our friends are homeschooling Catholic families, so this particular rule may be the most limiting! It eliminates John, Ryan, Nathan, Robert, Christopher, Michael, Ian, Jeremy (and Jeremiah), Benjamin, Nicholas, Zachary (and Zachariah), Ron, Scott, Jeff (and Jeffery, Geoff, Geoffory, etc.), Jason, Dale, Liam (which I like extremely), Henry, Kurt, Keith, Don, Dave (David), Chad, Patrick, Matthew, Emil, Jack (and Jackson), Kent, Gregory, Sean, Steven, Charles, Anthony, Peter, Leighton (potential middle name), Isaiah, Elias, Duane, Arthur, Wayne, Isaac, Maximillian, Gabriel, Damien, Dominic, Xavier, Jerrod, Francis, Jonathan, Randy, Ethan, Aidan, Barrett, Thomas, Leonard, Samuel, Parker, Trevor, Jacob, Ken, Alan, Augustine, Oliver, Caleb, Elijah, Herbert, James, Samson, Luke, Wesley, Solomon, Adam, and a host of others.
The "no one we know well can have the name" rule is probably why we are having so much trouble. We know so many more people than we did when we had the first one--and so many of our friends and family have had children since then! Enough of my favorites have been used by others that I don't even have a list to carry forward anymore so I feel like we are starting from scratch. *sigh*
I know it will work out, and that we will find a name, it is just frustrating. I will be using all the suggestions as a starting point, whether they meet the "rules" or not. At least it will be something less than the book of 36000 baby names!
So thanks, everyone, and keep them coming!

Ooh, I like Simeon for your specifications. We have local friends with a Simeon, and it is a great name!

What about Matthias?
We don't repeat initials either so I understand that idea.
What about Tobias?

We have Nathaniel and it is constantly getting shortened. His family nickname is "Than," so when people call him "Nate" or "Nathan" he gets really annoyed.
Our oldest is Christian - - and no one has shortened that, much to my surprise!

I've moved enough to know that the "know someone" rule will just backfire.. even if you never move.. someone with your child's name is just as likely to move near you and unless you're also going to have a rule that "we can't make friends with people who have our kids names"..

I really wouldn't worry about the possible shortening of a name. Unless you come upon a rude person, just telling someone my name is (blank) please call me by my name is all you need to say to keep it that way. Boy names are hard and we always struggled. I can come up with a ton of girl names I like.

I have a Navy friend named Micah and no one, ever, would dream of calling him Mike. We've known him for years and I have never heard anyone shorten his name.
Our friend Nathaniel is "Nat" by choice.
My student, Joel,is Joel. Like Micah, the name Joel does not have a nickname.
I confess to liking the name Gavin...it's Irish.
One of my friends named her son Gilbert, for G. K. Chesterton. (And, oh, is this little guy a cutie!)
I love baby names but it's late and I'm tired...let me think some more!
