The Sound of Music is my dd's favorite movie so I would like to get her a book about the true story of the Von Trapps. She's curious, and I am too, about what happened after they fled to the mountains.
I notice there are several books at Amazon, but I'm not sure which would be best. Any recommendations?

Becky, The Story of the Von Trapp Family Singers is the book written by Maria von Trapp that tells of both the family's time in Austria, their escape, and their subsequent travels to the United States. I really enjoyed it, but it also made clear to me that the movie is only very loosely based on the actual life of the family. The true story is wonderful, though. I'm sure your daughter would enjoy it!
ETA: I'd recommend it for ages 13+. Not sure how old your daughter is.

Maria Von Trapp wrote several books, continuing their family's story. I just love all her books. I remember reading the first time and finding out how Catholic they were and how whitewashed Sound of Music was of their faith, I got a little disheartened.
If she's younger than 13, there's a nice book The World of the Trapp Family by William Anderson or the picture book V is for Von Trapp.

I'd also recommend getting recordings of the real family. They are really enjoyable, but different from the movie.
One Voice is probably the best selection for all year round music, including Christmas.
Just saw this newer one which I don't have. Need to request this for my birthday: Journey
But there are several other cds or mp3 files you can get.

Thanks Caroline and Jennifer! My dd is almost 14 so I'm thinking it would make a good birthday gift! She has a beautiful voice and loves music so that music recommendations are also helpful!

My 12 yo ds read this book for school. He liked it. I didn't pre-read it so I hope that there wansn't anything to disturbing in it. At least he didn't bring up anything alarming during narration's. However, we have been studying WWII throughout this year so this fit in with all of the Nazi stuff and have a few discussions about the war and the racism that existed.

Thank you Betsy. That's good to know. She actually learned a little about the holocaust before going on the Right to Life March in Washington DC, so that is another reason why this will be a good read for her.

I picked this book up at the library and I'm loving it! It is funny and honest and I really enjoy learning about the family. Thanks for the recommendation! My family was disappointed as I yelled out things that didn't really happened that was in The Sound of Music movie. I got the movie from the library too and put it in one evening. Even though all the males in my house were making fun of me for watching it, they all came in to watch and enjoyed it!

Just catching up with this again. There is nothing disturbing in it, but the book is not really as attention-grabbing for most younger children, which is the only reason I suggested it for the teen years and up. I think a little older child would enjoy it a bit more and have a better understanding of the kinds of dangers the Von Trapps faced under the Nazi regime. There is nothing in it a younger child couldn't hear, and it would be a good family read aloud.

Thank you for this book recommendation! My daughter and I have been reading it together and have enjoyed it tremendously! We've bought several copies (only currently available in paperback) to give as Easter gifts and to add to our Parish Library.
It has been refreshing to read about a Catholic family steeped in their faith. And, their adventures and the way Maria retells them are quite funny!

Isn't it wonderful? I just love it! I've read it so many times. And my mother and sisters just giggled so much on the 3 sizes she needed to cover up her expectancy while on tour.

Does anyone know if the children remained Catholic after they settled in the US?

I don't know for sure. I don't think all of them stayed Catholic, or at least didn't practice as strictly as they did when Maria was around. I have heard of resentment on how Maria was very strict. One daughter eloped because she couldn't get permission to marry, even though the groom was a good Catholic. According to her, Maria didn't want to break up the singing group.
The grandchildren are the ones that are probably not practicing. There was divorce and remarriages with some of the original Trapp family.
The family members that do concertts and cds, such as the Von Trapp Children and Elisabeth Von Trapp seem to belong to a Christian group. But I'm not sure.
Two years ago I compiled a long post on the Von Trapp family, with different books, cds, and websites I know of.
I forgot to request the Journey 2CD SET, and I also don't have My Favorite Songs which I think would be a great book and cd to teach folk songs to my boys. Need to save my pennies again!

Thanks Jennifer. It is always a little sad to see the following generations lose their faith--even when it was such a part of their domestic church...ahh..free will! Good reminder to fortify our families with all the grace we can muster. When we just had 2 kids we were able to go to Salzburg through a huge blessing/conincidence...one of my favorite cities, so very beautiful.

Thanks for this thread.
I have The story of the Van Trapp Singers, but was uneasy about DD reading it as yet. She will be 15 then.
We will be reading it next term-. (We are about to break for 2 weeks this Friday.)
God bless
Leanne
