It has been recommend to me to stop drinking milk and switch to Almond Milk. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good brand? Or, any information, good or bad, to base a decision on?

Thanks!

Blue Diamond is the brand we use. We get the unsweetened or vanilla unsweetened. It is pretty mild and we just buy a case of it as it is much cheaper that way.

You can make your own with this recipe. I have not tried it yet, but it looks easy and fairly cheap to make (compared to the price of almond milk in our area).

BTW - I love almond milk!

I think you should read the labels carefully about the amount of calcium the brand you choose contains. I would go with the least amount in light of all the recent warnings about the dangers of calcium supplements.

Betsy, does it have to be almond milk or are you trying to find lactose free?

I've recently started drinking LACTAID and I've been so thrilled with it. My kids like that I'll have a bowl of cereal with them again

Before that (and still in my fridge) I've been drinking Silk. The kids especially like the fruit and chocolate versions. (they're a little sweet for me) but since I avoid icecream as well it makes a good sweet substitute.

We like Almond Breeze and our local store brand best -- vanilla sweetened or unsweetened. I drink rice milk on occasion and like it too, but only in cereal. I don't like either one in by itself. My son didn't like either alone but after having it for years in cereal, he no longer likes the taste of milk and likes almond milk.

Thanks everyone. I am going to go shopping later today to look for these brands.   I will say that at first I discarded the idea of making my own, but it really doesn't look that hard....just one more think to do, though!

I have tried the Trader Joes variety and it's okay. I don't really like the taste of milk just to drink....so I am not hoping for much with Almond Milk. However, I am interested if I feel any different if I switch.

Honestly, my coffee it where I mainly drink it!

I wish there was something good to have with black tea- that is where I really miss it.

Oh I never found a good substitute with the coffee. Black with sugar is better than with almond, rice or soy milk for me! I hope that you find something that works, Betsy. I do find that rice milk is "milder" than almond milk, so you might try that. And I don't know *what* I'd try with tea! Maybe honey and lemon so that you don't even try to mimic the flavor of milk?

I was just at the market and noticed that there is a Silk brand soy based creamer. To be honest I was tempted to buy but have a few cartons of unsweetend Silk almond milk in my fridge and that's what I use in my coffee and tea. I'll try it once I get low on my supply

Sorry Kristie, I see you already mentioned the soy based. What about the coconut milk creamer? I noticed that today too. (See what these post get me thinking about when I'm shopping )

The problem with other creamer substitutes is they don't naturally have as much fat as half and half. I never could find a good substitute.

And frankly, except in allergy situations when nursing my son, I'm quite attached to my dash of half and half in my coffee.

Probably should give it up since I am so attached.

Good point Jenn, my only problem is I don't use only a dash!    I am more of a Latte Drinker. After I posted this my family and I got a cold so I haven't even looked yet. We are all better now so I need to get to the store and check a few of these out.

I'm heavy handed, but not as much as latte style.

Of the alternatives I have tried, coconut is the best, but I think it is better with both the milk and sugar whereas I like my coffee plain, too, when it is half and half or whole milk.

There are flavored options, too, which are nice alternatives to the fancy Coffee Mates (which, for all the junk they have in them, I think they are actually dairy free ).

It's horrible to read the ingredient labels of those creamers. I do believe they have casein. When I was nursing my oldest and had to go Dairy Free the only thing I could find is Rich's Coffee Rich Creamer, which is usually in the freezer section. But it's got corn syrup and sugar and hydrogenated oils. My mother-in-law prefers it to half and half.

But when you're desperate and need to make some choices, this one was it. The Soy I didn't like at all.
