Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone here run a Yahoo group?

I've set up a new one and I'm having trouble with some things. I can't seem to find the answers at Yahoo.      Mainly:

1. Membership must be approved, and we are asking for a brief bio from new members before approval. Is there a way to ask for and receive this automatically? At the moment new members are marked 'pending' but if I approve them then they are in without having sent a bio. Do I have to send an individual email to each person as she subscribes?

2. The home page has the list-owner email, standard Yahoo format (listnameowner@yahoogroups.com) but I don't know where to go and see that account. Someone sent an email to it. I use my personal account to approve memberships, not a Yahoo account.

Thanks!

I am an owner/moderator for several Yahoo groups.

That is what I have to do - send them an email and ask for information.   But I get an email notification every time someone tries to join so I just hit reply to that. I have a standard form saved in my drafts file that I paste into that email asking for the information needed.

Anything that is sent to the listnameowner@yahoogroups.com should come directly to your personal account - if that is the address associated with that yahoo group. I get those emails automatically to personal account since that is the account listed in my owner information.

Mary, this is very helpful. I did get an email notification for the new member. Now if I hit reply, I have to paste his address in the 'To' box, right? Because right now if I just hit reply it goes back to "My Group accepts -sub @ Yahoo" type of address.

Maybe there's a delay on that. The new member sent an email there and when I didn't receive it I sent one too. Still nothing. But I know Yahoo can be that way sometimes.

Tami,
You could also put something on your front page of the Yahoo group that says if you would like to join the group please include biographical information in the request to join - and then specify what you want in the brief bio. If they follow those instructions every request to join will include the information you want. Problem is that there is a limited amount of space allowed in that box, so they do have to be brief.

Thanks, Mary, I may do that.

When you reply to a subscribe email, does it show your personal email?

In other words, is there a way to have that 'request bio' message come from the Yahoo owner email?

No, I don't think so - the owner messages are funneled to the email connected to the owner, so when you reply to the person requesting membership it does go through as your address. For us our membership is all local so I don't worry about my email address being visible. Trying to think if there is a way around that...

Tami, I figured out a bypass. From the pending page you can send an email to anyone who has requested membership. When you first click on that person's address to send them an email it generates a message box. The default will put your address in the "From" box but you can drop down in the box and select the owner address as who you want to have it from. That way what is sent to the person comes from the owner address. I tried it today with a membership that was pending in our group and it worked!
