where would you live, and why? Oh, must be in the USA!  (Yes, we would all love to live in Paris!)
I'm struggling with our current location. Actually I've lived here all my life and it is so time for a change. Wondering if really the grass is greener on the other side.

Depends, could I take my entire family with me? I don't think I could live away from my large extended family, I'd have no babysitters!  I love our location since it is central to many major cities, has a rolling topography, experiences four seasons, is an 8 hour drive from the beach, is close to many historical sites (easy weekend trips), lots of national/state parks, great amenities, choice of city, small town, or country life, and lots of other pluses.
Negatives - humid!!! in the summertime and horrible on the sinuses in every season.
I wouldn't actually mind living in the mountains of KY, TN, or WV. Oh, and Utah was phenomenal in terms of topography (not sure how the living is). I'm too much of a chicken to live in the plains (tornadoes frighten me), and I don't like the sand enough to live near an ocean or desert.
I have thought it would be nice to live in the Carolinas also.

We have so much family near us that I don't think we'd ever consider moving. My parents and my four siblings, and DH's parents and his brother all live within 40 minutes of our house (and the majority of them live within 20 minutes).
That said, DH is strongly considering going RVing next year at this time for a month...or two...or three.
NH is great because it has four seasons, is close to the ocean, close to the mountains, and close to Boston for those who like big cities.

I love living in NC, not in but near the mountains. If I could choose, I would live IN the mountains, but where we are, in the western Piedmont, in a small town, is very nice. Compared with other places we've lived (TN, UT), it's relatively easy to get to the coast, too, so we can have the best of both without having to move heaven and earth.
I do miss the Intermountain West, though. I'm not sure I'd want to live in Utah again, necessarily, though visually it's breathtaking, and I love both mountains and desert. Colorado, maybe . . .
I do miss living near our TN family, but a day's drive is better than a 6-hour (from UT) or transatlantic (from the UK) flight, so I'll take it, especially since here my husband has a job, and in TN he did not. Full-time employment is one of the things I like best about our living here, but truly, it's beautiful, and people could not be nicer.

I think someone asked this question a few years ago.
I still miss Charlottesville, VA. Small college(UVA) town near the mountains (Shenandoah National park), beautiful, friendly, fun, great homeschoolers, 1hour to Richmond, 2 hours to D.C., 4 seasons, great weather, good healthcare, lots of history and attractions, the Atlantic Ocean, and I could go on.... 
A tad expensive, but not ridiculous for what you get.
I really hope dh and I can retire there. I am STILL homesick for VA.

Does it have to be in the US? I will speak for up here in Canada: I still miss living on the West Coast on the ocean. But I especially miss the interior of British Columbia in the Selkirk mountains. Four seasons, no humidity, no bugs, tons of snow in the winter but no wind, lots of running streams and really good accesible organic fruits and veggies. As much as I love the people here, our Parish, the activities my kids are in, I am pretty tired of the weather (it is -40 once again) and the flatness of it all!
I am pretty sure we are retiring somewhere back in BC as my kids pine away for it too!

Michigan! Everything is great here, well except for the government and the weather this year. But I really do love where we live. We're near a small town and our house is near the woods and river so wildlife abounds. There are many lakes and it's not too far to take a day trip to one of the big lakes. There's even a house for sale down the street! Perfect!
OH!, and homeschooling is easy peasy here! Nothing to send in, no mandatory tests.

This is a very tough call for me. I LOVE South Florida most of the year. We are so close to the beach, we don't get snow storms and horrible flus. There is every imaginable activity here from Art museums and 45 libraries to visit and Downtown is amazing! I love the food choices here as well. I can literally get ANY type of food I want. And not to mention the amazing Cuban food that is super cheap and oh how delicious. I'm also a city girl through and through and LOVE the urban environment. I cannot even imagine living in the country or on a farm.
AND YET...
I wonder about living out in the middle of nowhere with stores 40 minutes away (or more) and SNOW, I literally dream of snow. I lived in Minnesota for 8 years and went to Steubenville for college so I know about snow but its been so very long. Also all that knitting that I do, and yet, I have to knit in cottons and blends because there is on way I'm wearing wool down here.
When we moved back to S. Florida, my family was all around me and little by little we have been left pretty much on our own. My mom and Dad are gone, my sister moved away and my grandparents have all passed away except for one grandmother that is ill. I would love to be close to my husband's family in Minnesota but hubby says there is NO WAY he is patrolling the streets in -15 weather (he is in Law enforcement)
I would love to travel, spend a year in Alaska, then a year in South Carolina and a year in Arizona, a year in Texas, a year in the Rockies. Hey if I did that, I could meet all of YOU!!!!
Ok, so back to the original question.... I guess that is we could move back to MN and figure out a way for hubby to not have to work outside, I'd choose there. (Oh and I hear there is a house down by TracyD for sale.

I've moved more times... and what I've found is that there's really no place that would have everything I would want.. (it's impossible to live in the middle of no where on acre of lang out by yourself and still be close enough for kids to walk to activities )
Also, the area might be beautiful but the community so closed that you are never considered anything but an outsider. And a good community makes up for a lot of other things.
We're remodeling our house because for this time, what we're doing in our small town trumps the wilderness cabin we'd love to live in.
My preference is in the mountains, near water, wilderness, not too far from a town with reasonable grocery shopping and Mass but not in town, no visible neighbors, 4 seasons and snow, colder winter are preferable to hotter summers. I find the Alpine meadows, lovely open spaces surrounded by trees, high in the mountains to be breathtaking.
BUT at this time that preference is trumped by involvement in swim team, lacrosse, scouts, volunteer fire department and such. So we live in a lovely small town, in the high desert, but near the pine forest, 4 seasons and snow (though not always as much as I'd like ) and the community is welcoming. It's a good trade.

Yes, I do believe that the grass IS greener in some places. I have had the privilege of living in many US locations and some are much EASIER to live in than others. For example, I LOVED Elko NV and my friends there but living rural remote was rough. So I choose...
Phoenix Arizona!
It is a great metro area with lots of burbs and small towns (I actually live in a little town east of Phoenix.) It has great highways to get here and there. Super supportive of homeschoolers AND private, public school cooperation. Gorgeous weather (if you don't count July and August ). International airport. PROFESSIONAL SPORTS!!!!! Art, culture, FOOD! Drive to San Diego beaches and Flagstaff snow :)
So I love my home :) We were hit very hard by the recession. Housing prices are just creeping up so there are still great deals to be had.

I have to second Becky, here. I love living in MI. Nature-wise, I love the lakes! (inland and Lakes Erie, Huron, Superior, and Michigan!) I love the parks! I love the UP! I love the rivers- great for canoeing- #3 ds went on an 81 mile canoe trip two years back. Isle Royale-#1 ds spent a week backpacking there and LOVED it! Other things I love: The snow! The seasons! The wildlife! Places we love include Traverse City! Plymouth! Ludington (we had the most incredible time there, watching the fog roll in from the lake, almost scary, as my boys were playing in the lake!) The cider mills! Kalamazoo's Air and Space Museum. The Yankee Air Museum. Greenfield Village. The Fox Theatre. The Redford Theatre. The University of Michigan (both the school and the Hospital.) Ann Arbor.
The Detroit Opera House. The Father Solanus Casey Center and the Capuchins. The Sweetest Heart of Mary. St. Mary's in Greektown. Sts. Peter and Paul. Ave Maria Radio. Fr. John Riccardo (we are INCREDIBLY blessed with very inspirational priests and laypeople!) Skating rinks. The Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Pointe. The Soo. Eagle Harbor! Torch Lake. Crystal Lake. Frankenmuth and Bronners. Northville. Hines Park. The Metroparks. The Mighty Mac. Tigers. Red Wings. (And we still love Steve Yzerman, even though he went south.  ) There's more, but I should stop!
Well, I guess you can get the idea I love my state!
