Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Two newly published picture books on the building of the White House to recommend.

The House That George Built (Suzanne Slade) - Story about George Washington's part in having the White House built - from site selection, planning and design, to implementation. Includes much information about the process and details yet also told in a fun rhythmic verse similar to "House that Jack Built." Great illustrations by Rebecca Bond.

Brick by Brick (Charles Smith) - Short verse tell story of the hands that built the White House - both free and slave. Focuses mostly on the slave experience and conditions. Also how some slaves learned skilled trade and were finally able to earn some of the money verses having it go to the owners. Floyd Coopers illustrations really set the tone of time and condition.

Anyone else have White House picture books to recommend?

Those look GREAT, Mary! I just requested the first one. We don't have the second one....must make a purchase request.

There is Thanksgiving at the White House.

These are not exactly "great stories" but interesting anyway:

Our White House: looking in looking out. I think I saw this one at the library a couple years ago.

Cheryl Harness has a Ghosts of the White House that's probably similar to Ghosts of the Civil War, which my kids LOVE!

If the Walls Could Talk

And, there are, of course, the many books about the PETS of the White House!

There is also A Christmas Tree in the White House which is similar. Centers around a holiday and the children of one of the presidents (Roosevelts)

First Garden: The White House Garden and How It Grew (Robbin Gourley) - When Michelle Obama planted a kitchen garden at the White House it got lots of publicity. This book has a lot about that garden, but also looks at the different ways the White House lawn has been used by past presidents through the years. It is interesting.
