For the first time ever, we started a book of firsts this year on Jan 1.
Kids are enjoying it- it's adding just a little more independent writing and sketching here.
Of course, I had to record that the first episode of Downton Abbey was on Jan 6 My ds laughed and laughed when he saw that in the book of firsts.
I am using just an unlined sketch pad from Michaels for ours, spiral bound. I used some interesting scrapbook paper to cover the front and printed off "Our Book of Firsts" to put on as the title.
This has also spurred other writing here...
ds was inspired to write his first book of gross out recipes.
All his idea- one afternoon he sat down and wrote into the evening hours... thirty recipes for things like Road Kill Stew and Mashed Fly Pie
OK- not sure where he gets these ideas, but he had enormous fun writing these and grossing me out with them. Not excited about the topic- but I was very excited he did this. The spelling was not all that bad, and the recipes were written in perfect recipe format.
It gives me hope!

Melinda,
I wanted to share with you my book of firsts that you can download for free.
Down Load It Here!
There is really no standard way to do this, but I took the opportunity to link as much Marian lore of flowers and their "first" with my book of Firsts.
Anyway, thanks for the reminder to pull it out. I tend to do this more in the springs. But, really around here there is so much that happens all year!

I've had a copy of Betsy's lovely journal printed to use for over a year!
Thanks for the reminder (or should I say, kick in the pants ) to try to get this going in the new year

FWIW, I did update my journal a bit when I launched my website. I went back and cut out the back ground on all of the flowers on the bottom right corner so there is more room to write dates at the end of the month.

Ooh, thanks for the reminder!! Betsy, I printed out our PDF last year and used it until I inexplicably forgot about it around the end of May. Time to begin again, and I hope this year we'll be able to see it through!
