Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I grew up lighting 2 purple, 1 pink (Gaudete Sunday), and then 1 purple. We did it in our house, and it was the same at Sunday Mass. I'm sure that's how it's done.

My DSs go to a Presbyterian preschool. D made his wreath and we were given a hand-out to use at home stating you light the 3 purple, and save the pink for last. Anybody know if they do it differently among the Protestants? Do other Protestant denominations even have advent wreaths & lighting ceremonies?

While we're on the subject, when I was little, a family was chosen to go up and light the wreath at mass each Sunday. At some point, they ended that ritual, and the candles were already lit when Mass began. Do any churches still have the ceremony or has it been officially ended? I know it added some time to the Mass, but I enjoyed seeing it as a child.

It varies year to year, but at our parish this year they did have families light the candles the first week after the blessing this year. I don't think there is a set way to do that.

The 2 purple first, the pink, followed by the last purple is the correct order of lighting. They correspond with the liturgical vestment colors for those Sundays. Catholics and Lutherans, I think have been doing the Advent wreath tradition the longest. Other Protestants are only more recently adopting the Advent traditions, like the wreath, and I have seen them do it in the order you describe if they even use those colors. Colors of candles vary with other churches (blue, red, etc.). I think it is that they don't really know anything about the purple and pink as related to the liturgical season and vestments as Catholics use it symbolically.
