Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Here is an interesting article in Catholic Exchange about St. Nicholas.

So, what is everyone doing for St. Nick's day?   We are doing our tried-and-true chocolate coins and all of my kids are getting much needed under garments . I would have loved to make it till Christmas on this one...but.it.just.couldn't.wait!!!!

We do chocolate coins, a bit of old fashioned (more or less) candy, and pomegranites.. this year for those who don't like pomegranites (weird children) I'm doing kiwi, small mangos, papaya and a pineapple (which they all like for sure). And I have some wooden tops for each. I don't usually do any big gifts.. a book or movie to share or new toothbrushes.. this year it's wooden tops, caramel creams, chocolate coins, peppermint puffs and exotic fruit.

I had to special order chocolate coins that are dairy free, then we have a few toys. I'll be reading a few picture books, and we'll go to Mass tomorrow, since it's a name day for one of my sons.

Our parish has added an extra noon Mass for Advent which is in the smaller chapel. We've gone twice this week, and my boys are much more attentive when Mass is in an intimate setting. It also helps when they get asked to bring up the gifts.

I have to admit noon Mass works better for this slow moving mama in the morning.

We do something a little different for St. Nicholas Day. We, as a family, do something to surprise another family. One year we made a neighbor family dinner and left it on their side porch. My boys rang their bell and ran away as fast as they could. Last year we made gingerbread men and attached a card with information about St. Nicholas. We hung the gingerbread men on several different neighbors doors, and traveled around town to a few people we knew. Tomorrow we are going to do chocolate coins in shoes (secretly!) when we go to a birthday party.

Actually, we haven't read the picture books. We're doing a different focus and reading more chapter books. The picture books aren't gone, but they are supplemental to the chapter books.

And we've been short of time and haven't had time to read our St. Nicholas books yet. They will have to be read the rest of the week.

But the book we are reading this week is Christmas Anna Angel by by Ruth Sawyer, illustrated by Kate Seredy. The illustrations are so gorgeous! It covers St. Nicholas Day (with St. Nicholas visiting on a white horse -- so my son is convinced he'll ride one here), St. Lucy's Day, and Christmas. The book is harder to find, but so worth it!

I want more like this book!

We do the chocolate coins, a clementine, a small piece for their Nativity set (I started giving them Fontanini pieces several years ago so that by the time they are ready to move out, they have their own small Nativity set), a St. Nicholas themed ornament, prayer card or statue and a book on St. Nicholas. I try to make all the gifts symbolic in some way.

The kids just put their shoes outside our door with carrots for St. Nick's horse. They'll get chocolate coins, candy cane and a clementine in return

We are trying two new recipes tomorrow for our story time tea. 1. Trader Joe's hot chocolate then putting their candy cane tea bag in the hot chocolate (I hear it's really good) and 2. we're baking speculoos cookies for the first time

Afternoon of St Nick day here exhausted and still have dh's work party tonight.

Children awoke to three chooclate coins and candy canes in their bags along with a book much excitement.

Then we hosted our 2nd St Nick party with a couple of other families, we also invited a few new faces this year and added a few new activities we didn't do last year. the hit of the day was the play that our older children performed

OK....we WERE THE RECIPIENTS OF THIS TONIGHT!!!!!!!! The kids thought it was just SO EXCITING!

:: we have just moved here...3 months ago...live in the boondocks, dont' know a lot of people.

:: It was about 7:30 pm and we were all in the kitchen getting ready for our St. Nicholas breakfast...making rolls, setting table....when the DOORBELL RINGS!          The DOORBELL SHOULD NOT RING IN NORTH IDAHO AT 7:30PM!!!!

:: I yell at the kids to GET AWAY FROM ALL WINDOWS and GO GET DADDY! ( ....guess i've been living in Seattle too long... )

:: After a few minutes, dh gets to the door and there is a big basket of treats at the door step, and he looks around and hears a car drive off at the end of the driveway.

:: He comes in a calls everyone out from under the furniture and tells me to put my gun back in the lockbox ....and reads the little card!   "May St. Nicholas bring you joy throughout Advent and the Christmas season!"

The kids thought it was SO NEAT! They were in SEVENTH HEAVEN, I tell you! We could barely get them to FOCUS on cinnamon rolls and then get settled into bed. Such neat conversations followed about ST. Nicholas and the gold and giving and charity, etc.

So, if anyone is thinking about ever doing this....it's SO FUN!

And, yes, we do think we know who it is....I mean it's really not that hard....we only know 2 families here...

Oh yes, and to answer.....

We have little taffies and gold coins and fritos in the shoes tonight.   My older girls are getting Bette Crocker's Cooky Book!!!

Read some fun picture books today.

And, we have a St. Nicholas breakfast in the am....hot cider and cinnamon rolls at a very pretty table that I had NOTHING to do with!

I'm sitting amongst the whistles and counting of coins (according to their monetary value, not chocolate quantity, lol) making a TON of cake mix waffles to serve with cinnamon roll topping. It is a bit easier than rolls, especially since we are gluten free, but on mix makes a lot of waffles! Of course, my oldest reminded me last night, so there was no "forgetting"

Supposedly, we are making cookies today, too, but we still have cake from my birthday and now cake waffles--cookies could put us over

I picked up this Baker's Dozen math game to go along with reading the book The Baker's Dozen, so that is on our horizon for today.

St. Nick brought chocolate coins, new Pjs and a Christmas book for each child. I made a quick bread (with cream cheese ) yesterday to have for breakfast this morning.

Oh- I also couldn't resist the Playmobil St. Nick and Angel that the Catholic Child had as part of their free shipping deal over Thanksgiving.
I love the little St. Nick- whoever thought Playmobil would make a bishop? St. Nick and Angel

But I have to say that I *love* the idea of being St. Nick for friends and neighbors. That is definitely going on the agenda for next year

Okay, Suzanne, that is the coolest! Monica, I love the secret St. Nick! That is such a great idea! I'm sure the children enjoy that so much!

And those Playmobil St. Nick's are so cool! They were in the shoes last year.

That game looks cute! Right now there is silence because they are building a Playmobil set -- a St. Nick gift from me, Winter Scene or something.

The kids have toothbrushes & a little toy w/ their shoes. He also brought us the Magic School Bus DVDs.

We're making Polish spice cakes/cookies from the St. Nicholas web site. We never did it in my parents' house, but my Mom's Polish & I thought it would be fun.

We're also going to watch the St. Nicholas Veggie Tales DVD.

Suzanne, what a great surprise!

We kept it simple this year. Clementines, Candy canes, and some peppermint hershey's kisses. I printed out some coloring pages but they knew those were from me. I was worried they'd be upset - no special presents to unwrap, nothing expensive- but there were no complaints. :)

In the shoes - Candy (favorites of the individual recipient) and a small gift from their wish list.

We had a party on the 5th with our homeschool group and played games and made crafts to fit the feast day. We also made and stuffed stockings for the seminarians at the 2 seminaries here. We delivered those to them today.

Oh and meant to add that I loved your story about your secret gift givers, Suzanne. What fun for the girls, especially in a new place. We have not done that on St. Nick day. We have done it many times for the Twelve Days of Christmas. It is a lot of fun to be the givers and try to be sneaky and creative. But one day sounds much more doable than the 12...I must be getting old...
