Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just noticed that this book by Kate diCamillo was published in 2007, but I just discovered it in a book store here in German last week. I picked the lone copy out of the pile of Christmas books attracted by the "quiet" cover illustration and of course, the name of the author.
I stood in the store and read it quickly and had to control the tears on the last pages. I have to say that the illustrations in this book are very powerful!!! The face of this little girl...... maybe because I have girls myself??? I bought it immediately and had it wrapped, so I can't go back and read it until Christmas when my youngest will unwrap it.
I looked for a review of the book on the forum, but only found it mentioned a couple of times. It is a very simple story, very little action, but lots of deep thinking on the part of the little girl and wonderment (is that a word?) on the part of the mother. Hearts are moved and "the Word became Flesh" for that little girl that Christmas...
and maybe all of what I felt at this first reading was only happening at that moment for myself and when I read it again I will be totally different???...

Glad you posted your thoughts so more people will experience it. I thought it was reviewed here, too, because on 4 Real is where I first heard about it. But I found that it was only from a link from this thread to Cay's blog after it was published. We have enjoyed the book as well. Sweet and simple.

It's the same illustrator as The First Christmas Stocking and The Third Gift and many of our other favorites.

Looking forward to reading it, Stephanie....thanks for mentioning!!!!!
