Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This is so strange ... I got my ears pierced when I was 13. When I was about 32, since I rarely bother with jewelry, I let my ears close up. I know they closed because when my mom got re-married 7 years ago she gave me a pair of earings to wear and I couldn't put them in (without self-repiercing ). All of a sudden, 12 years later, one of my ears is infected at the spot of the original piercing. It's no big deal, I am dealing with it with alcohol, but I just think it is so strange that after all these years it would get infected.

Any clue as to what would cause this?

Is it possible you rubbed it funny on a coat collar or while putting on a sweater?

My holes have been closed up for years as well, but they still get "dirty" for lack of a better word. I can imagine that some mild trauma might introduce an infection.

I've not worn earrings in years either - and once in a while I get tiny lumps in my ear lobe (they go away quickly) or it will feel like there is a earring post in the hole (doesn't hurt also goes away quickly) - and then once in a while, I could actually rub/squeeze my earlobe and just a bit of "something" comes out - dead skin cells collected together, perhaps? While the hole may close up pretty tightly, there is still skin inside that created that "tunnel" to begin with - and since all of our skin sheds - I could see how over time stuff might "build up" - causing either an infection or what I described above. I am just guessing ;)
