Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Tried and true recipe for the cinnamon ornaments? We were going to make these last year after I bought a bucket of cookie cutters, but didn't have the time. Now I can't find the recipe I had. Past experience with these tell me I need to use a recipe that has good results. I've seen them never get hard or fall apart or too hard to shape. Yet, I still have the ones I made as a child, so I know it can go great too!

Cassie,

Our family uses the same recipe used for making our Lenten Crown of Thorns to make ornaments. The recipe makes a dough that rolls and shapes easily, and the ornaments don't loose their shape/fall apart once baked. Perhaps it is what you are looking for?

I found the recipe my mom gave me a while back. I'm pretty sure that this is what I used when we made them, and they have help up well.

Cinnamon Ornaments

Ingredients
4.12 oz. ground cinnamon (one cup)
1/2 cup applesauce
1/4 cup white craft glue

Mix together. Turn dough over and over until the consistency is smooth and dry. Let the dough stand for one hour. Then turn out 1/4 of the dough onto a cool, flat surface, then flatten the mound with your hands. (Can use parchment paper.)

Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thick. If it becomes too dry, spritz it with water. If it sticks to the rolling pin or work surface, sprinkle it with cinnamon.

Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Poke holes for hanging. Lay on paper towels on wire rack to dry. Repeat with remaining dough. Let ornaments air dry for at least 24 hours, turning every 6 hours or so to keep them flat.

If desired, you can bake them dry. Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Transfer the ornaments to a baking sheet. Bake, flipping once, until dry, about 2 hours.

This is how we have always made our ornaments. We still have some of our original ornaments that we made when my oldest was 3.

Need:
    1 ½ cups ground cinnamon
    1 cup applesauce
¼ cup white non-toxic school glue (optional; if you decide not to use glue, then increase the applesauce by ¼ cup)
    Bowl
    Plastic food wrap
    Rolling pins
    Wax paper
Cookie cutters (We use a set similar to this one.)
Ribbon, yarn, fishing line, etc. for hanging
    Straws

How to Make:

1. Mix cinnamon, applesauce, and glue together in a bowl. The dough should be as thick as cookie dough. If the dough isn’t thick enough, add a little more cinnamon. If it is too stiff, add a little water.

2. Remove dough from bowl and knead. Put it back in the bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let it sit for a half hour.

3. Remove the dough, knead again until it is smooth (the smoother the dough, the better the ornaments look). Roll the dough between wax paper so that it is ¼ to ⅛ inch thick.

4. Cut out desired shapes with cookie cutters. Use a straw to punch a hole for the ribbon to hang.

5. Carefully place the shapes on a piece of clean wax paper. Turn the ornaments over regularly in order to prevent the ends from curling up and help them dry evenly. They will take about 5 days to dry.

Notes:
The ornaments will get smaller during the drying process.
Once the ornaments are dry, acrylic paints may be applied, if desired. We do not paint our ornaments. The ornaments make our house smell delicious.
