Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So my sister is throwing a Christmas party and the theme for the food is Italian.. main dish will be lasagna.

I'll take something like homemade mac and cheese for my kids (only a few) that don't care as much for lasagna.

But what else to take.. there's always the salad and bread thing.. but I have a crew of budding chefs here and we're wanting something.. more.. definately wanting some desserts.. traditional Christmas foods... side dishes...

What do you ladies know? I don't know so much about Italian cookery and need some suggestions.. we can make about anything if we have a recipe so...

I love Italian panettone at Christmas, but we've always bought ours from the local Italian grocer and never made it.

My friend makes these Italian cookies from her husband's family's traditional Christmas recipe.

Oh goodness! My family is Italian and that is what we always do for Christmas.

Starters:
antipasto
stuffed mushrooms
straciatella soup

My grandma always served a roasted chicken with pasta. I don't know why. She also always served lots of vegetable sides and a fresh salad.

Desserts:
Neopolitan cookies (my fav)
Zepole
granita
casata
biscotti

Let me know what sounds good and I will try to get the recipe typed up for you.

I've always been attracted to the struffoli, Italian honey balls, which can be piled into a shape of a Christmas Tree, drenched with honey and sprinkles.

But they are fried, so not sure if you want your budding bakers to do that.

Spend some time on Martha Stewart's site searching for Italian Christmas, or Giada. Lots of ideas -- too hard to choose!

Oh Stuffed mushrooms.. yum I do one that is so simple.. just garlic and mozzarella but it's real good.

I was looking at a recipe for the struffoli yesterday.. it's tempting. My oldest could handle the frying. She's made candy (peanut brittle!) on her own with a recipe, and she's helped making jams too. The recipe I saw said it was good for up to 5 days. so I was thinking it could be made ahead which would be nice. (If I can keep the littles out of it )

What do you do for the antipasto, Michelle???

We also like fancy stuffed olives for the holidays.

I have a good recipe for marinated olives - easy, too!

What about green beans cooked with some canned diced tomato and some onion? (If this sounds good, I have the recipe...these are just the main ingredients.)

Whatever I happen to have! There is no recipe, just whatever your family likes. Usually I do some cold cuts (I see you are in Oregon, do you have a New Seasons near you? I like to buy the parmesan covered salami, and chipotle turkey breast). I buy good cheese. Then we do palm hearts, sometimes artichoke hearts, olives, pickles, etc. Sometimes I will put a little marinated mozzarella ball on a toothpick with a cherry tomato.

The offering should be delicious, beautiful and easy.

Cucidati or what American's often call Italian fig cookies. It isn't Christmas in an Italian family without cucidati. My recipe is similar to most online, but I don't add rum and ours are the shape of logs. My grandmother frosted some and left others plain. I don't remember sprinkles, so that must be something new. They really aren't hard to make and they are much better than fig newtons.
