Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Oh, I need help! We are having a large gathering (30 people) for a birthday party and my usual meals are too pricey for our slashed budget. What are some good, inexpensive, simple meals for a large crowd? Maybe soup and salad with homemade bread? Sloppy Joe type barbeque?

Thanks in advance for any help! I'd love to keep it under $50 for food/drinks.

Oh, and it's a birthday party for my two youngest (turning 2 and 4). The cake is being baked by a SIL, so I don't need dessert.

When I host parties, people are generally so generous in offering to bring things. Could you count on guests for brings sides and the like?

I think that chili with cornbread and sides of salad with munchies are nice this time of year. Maybe chips and salsa for an appetizer, and the people can put the chips in their chili if they choose?

I was thinking the exact idea, perfect for this time of year. Add sour cream and grated cheese as sides (with the chips).

You could also serve rice, as some people like eating chili over rice.

My plan would be have chips and salsa, veggies and dip for appetizers, then chili and cornbread, perhaps a salad (but the veggies could count as that).

The only chili I have ever made is on the back of the Chili-O package . We usually eat this over spaghetti. So, a chili with cornbread would be more of a spicy, Texas chili? I found Ruth's Chili on the recipe index.
