The big treat for my food allergic son is Italian Ice. I make sure I get one without HFCS, but I still don't like all the extra stuff in it.
Has anyone tried making Italian Ice / Granita? Sorbet?
Is it super time-consuming?
Favorite recipes?

I've never tried making my own Italian Ice, but I will share that when my sin was seriously allergic to dairy we would eat Edy's sorbet and I thought it was fantastic. Good enough to serve to guests. This was 10 years ago, so check the label to make sure it's still dairy free.
we were also able to get dessert pizzas (apple and cherry pie flavor) from Pizza Hut that had no milk in them. Again, it's been 10 years so call the restaurant to make sure that's still the case.
My son had an extreme allergy ( if you drank milk, then kissed him, he would break out in a rash) and carried an Epi -pen for years, but outgrew it all around age 12.

My mom used to make it a lot when I was a kid. I have only made sorbet and granita. Actually, I taught my daughter to make it and now she does it.
My current favorite is this:
open a jar of home canned peaches, run through the blender and then pour into freezable container.
set timer for one hour
when timer goes off, stir vigorously
put back in the freezer
repeat the last three steps two more times (it will have been stirred 3x before you are done)
freeze until set
serve

We make a lot of our own healthy frozen treats. They are very quick:
1. Homemade fruit juice popsicles - I have 36 popsicle molds and we use natural fruit juices (no HFCS, no artificial colors,, no preservatives) - our favorites are TJ's peach juice, mango nectar, Newmans black grape juice and organic lemonade pops.
2. Our favorite tea time snack (and a great way to boost vitamins and fruit intake) is homemade sorbet. I use my Vitamix and it takes a couple of minutes to make yummy sorbet. We use fresh fruit with icecubes when available, though now through the winter we use frozen fruit. Our favorites are mango/strawberry with a little agave nectar and orange juice, strawberry lime juice, peach sorbet, lemon ice, orange sorbet (fresh oranges, honey and ice cubes)
3. I know you cannot do dairy - but a great dairy one is just frozen strawberries, fresh whipping cream and sugar/honey/agave. Just run the Vitamix for a minute or so on high and you have a yummy creamy icecream.

Do you have an ice cream maker? I've made yummy ice cream with canned coconut milk. I think my maker came with sorbet recipes, too, though I haven't tried it.
I've also used it in the Food processor processor with frozen fruit. If your frozen fruit ratio is high, it can definitely have a thicker "in a bowl with a spoon" consistency.
I know this wouldn't work for lemon, but if he'd go for berry or peach, I'll bet that a bag of frozen fruit on its own with sweetener would end up very much like a sorbet, though I haven't tried it.

Oh, and the food processor variety comes together very quickly!

Okay, so I couldn't resist, and after I posted that, I made a berry smoothie like concoction, and they are all eating it now, if that gives an idea for time

Lindsay - do you have the Cuisinart icecream maker? My daughter really wants one - and they are on offer now that summer is over. I have wondered how well they work and how easy it is to make fruit sorbets in them.

I've had good luck with our Cuisinart, though I don't use it often. I'm not usually thinking ahead like that, lol. It is easy to use, but I haven't used it for sorbet. It's so much easier than the bucket kind where you need ice and salt, I can't imagine a sorbet is difficult with a decent recipe. It doesn't make as much as the old fashioned makers do.
