Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Even though I'm having a hard time with Too Many Books, I did buy a new book while on vacation last week.

We regularly use Saints: A Year in Faith and Art by Rosa Giorgi. This is such a lovely book that follow the Church calendar, contains an image of a Classic Art Masterpiece for the saint of the day and has a very short biography. It's written for adults, but my son has used it for years as the first book to thumb through to see what feast day. There is a short description as to whether the saint is a martyr, what era, what country, who he/she protects, what his name means. If my son wants more, he goes to our shelves to find a lengthier biography (usually to Joan Windham first).

BTW, we had the Saints 2012 Wall Calendar last year and it was sooo lovely. I hope they have a 2013 one.

The book I bought last week is also by Rosa Giorgi Saints and Their Symbols. This one is a bit wider than the first book, so it's in the shape of a square. This book highlights the symbol of the saint, incorporating the symbols in the short biography. Each saints has the Feast Day, Appearance, Attributes, Biographical Notes, and patronage. The use of the art is again so stunning. So far I have not found any instance of nudity.

The book is arranged by the calendar, but two things to note. You have to thumb through or use the Index to find the saint, as there is no header or footer with the dates. Secondly, not every day has a saint, but closer to the General Roman Calendar. I do think that might be an advantage, to teach your child to be familiar with the Roman Calendar (they could find the saint of the day if they are familiar with other saints' days around that feast) and/or using an Index.

I love the paintings, and for some saints there are second pages with more detail (like St. Lawrence), and sometimes more than one image for a saint (like Clare of Assisi).

This is a must for our daily saints, but also a good books for Saints costumes.

Jenn, here is the corrected link for Saints and Their Symbols

(The one you gave is broken.)

Not sure whether the thank you or not for enabling the "book addiction"!

Thank goodness for Amazon's "Instant Order Update" to let me know I already bought a book.

I thought I would mention Rosa Giorgi's other book, Saints in Art.

This is a little different than the other two. The book is arranged alphabetically by name of the saint. There are art image or images portrayed and then have pointers with notes describing key points in the art piece.

Then for each saint there is a right column of info:
Name (what it means)
Earthly Life, dates and country
Characteristics and Activity
Connections with Other Saints
Venerated
Feast Days

What's so wonderful about all 3 books is that the art isn't duplicated. Each book uses different masterpieces.
