First sign of a head cold coming on what do you gals do? I do feel one coming - I hate to whine but - we were all sick last month!
I usually take zinc, herbal tea, drink water and juice, take Airborne and usually start taking antihistamine and decongestant right away. Anyway - what are your tools for trying to decrease the length and severity of a cold?
Thanks !
Barb

Sambucol with zinc. The one without zinc tastes just like the cough medicine my pediatrician made (in his office, sold by the bottle). The one with zinc seems to shorten a cold by a couple days, but I think everything tastes metallic while I'm taking it.

Elderberry (sabucol) is a specific for the flu virus but it also anti-viral so helps with most colds.. taking it right away generally helps.
I don't take decongestant or antihistamine unless really needed.. antihistamine dries thingns up, even with the decongestant, and might contribute to sinus problems (infections etc)
Increased vitamin C.. helps fluids thin and move more readily out (recently recommended it to a friends' son on a fire crew to use it, helped him so much most of the crew was using it and impressed by how it helped with the smoke inhalation)
I also like pineapple (bromelain) for a cold... reduces swelling including in the sinuses. Use real pineapple in a smoothie and add a bit of fresh grated ginger (it's also an antiviral and helps with healing). I also use the capsules when I'm not pregnant.
hot tea with lemon and honey (or just hot lemonade) helps with a sore throat.
When there's a lot of sickness out there I've used things preemptively.. clean hands after being some place public as soon as we get in the van with hand sanitizer and wash when we get home. Take the elderberry once a day on the days we go out. We don't get sick much at all when doing that.
