DS 13 takes an Algebra class outside the home 2x a week. They only meet Tues/Thurs for 1 hour each and then they complete assignments at home. The teacher has indicated they should be spending 2-3 hours a DAY on at-home assignments.   Is that normal for an average, focused learner? It's taking her that amount of time. Yesterday's assignments that are due next Tues include 55 problems. We divided it out by 3 days (excluding Sunday) and that's 18 problems per day. ?

My son does 15-30 problems a day, depending on his understanding of the lesson. It takes him about an hour daily to complete his assignments. He works on algebra five days a week.

My son does 1-2 hours per day, inclusive of the lesson (reading it, watching the DVD lesson if necessary), and then doing the "homework." He's in Alg 2 this year, but followed the same protocol in Alg 1. Two hours a day has been pretty much his standard; on all other subjects he spends roughly an hour daily. (well, he does math and German daily, but most other subjects he does in blocks -- a history day, an English day, a religion day).
3 hours a day sounds like a lot, but 2 sounds not out of the bounds of the normal for this level.

All of my children have done about 1-1.5 hours a day on upper level math. Sometimes, it would stretch out to 2 tops, including instructional time. I think 3 hours is excessive, even for a child who intends to use math in their future careers. My oldest ds received two engineering degrees in his four year college career, but we never did 3 hours of math a day in high school!!!!

I agree here. my dd spends no more than 1 1/2 hours a day. thats 4 days a week.

That seems like a lot to me. My daughter (13) is doing Life of Fred. I think she spends about an hour on the days she does it. I think twice a week. So that's 2 hours a week for her total.

I have talked more at length with her teacher and there was a little misunderstanding. She didn't think those particular problems should take more than about 1 1/2 hour total and that gave her Fri and Mon to do it before it was due on Tues. (And DD spent about that on it).
HOWEVER, the co-op director *does* estimate that they should be spending 8 hours at-home on math per week for Algebra 1. Well, we had a nice discussion  and her theory is a standard school one...prepare them for high school and college and eventually a full-time job by having them work "full-time" at high school academics. So, difference of opinion there.
But in the context of her math teacher she said my DD does beautiful, meticulous work and is why she's prob. a little slower. She did ease up on the workload this week by telling them that if they were grasping the concept they didn't have to go past a certain # so that was helpful.

I don't think we've ever spent more than an hour a day on math of any sort, and usually quite a bit less.
Life is too short to spend that much time on math, IMHO.

For us I made them stop at 1 or 1 and a half hours (depending on the child). If the child wants to come back to it later than fine. I even do this for my kid who is heading into Calculus and breathes math. I just don't think you can focus on something like math for more time straight than that.

Oh, and ditto what Theresa said! My dd, who wants to possibly major in math, would like to do nothing else (except acting and physics and sewing). But then she is missing the key literature, that wide banquet- three hours of math a day would take away from valuable time for that IMHO.

RIGHT! And I did love algebra too but didn't major in math (did finance/economics though so little different but I do like that numbers thing) but like Kristie said it does require a lot of intense focus.
