Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

When do you begin Latin and how do you teach it?

We began with Prima Latina from Memoria Press with a 10yo, a 7yo and a 3yo tagging along. We use the DVDs, because I have no Latin background. They are well worth the money to me! We will begin Latina Christiana this month.

Hope this helps!

Slogging through Prima Latina with a 5th grader. Will finish it next year. I am afraid that it has taken a back seat to writing this year so we do not do one lesson a week. DD has a much better memory so the time between lessons does not seem to hurt her ability to do the review lessons. Used the DVD since I do not know latin.
Mom on the other hand still has the prayer reminders around the kitchen.

My oldest did Prima Latina 2 yrs ago (age 8). We both enjoyed learning the Latin prayers, but she thought the workbook was dry (aka boring). Just this week she began Latin for Children and she really like the chant CD (which I think is going to be a fabulous resource for all of us, me included) and the activity book, which has lots of games and puzzles. We'll see how well this program holds her interest...

(One thing I don't like about it is that while the chant CD has both classical and ecclesiastical pronunciations, the DVDs seem only to use classical pronunc. Prima Latina, like the Church, uses ecclesiastical. This means the LFC DVDs won't be terribly useful for us, I'm afraid. But I like the rest of the program very much.)

My workbook-loving 7yo is just about to begin Prima Latina, at her own request.

The archives of the LatinClassicalEd yahoogroup have lots of reviews of the various Latin curricula.

By the way, I have been on a reading binge about Latin-centered classical education lately—here are some links if you're interested:

Multum non multa (chapter from Andrew Campbell's soon-to-be-released book, A Latin-Centered Education)

An Apology for Latin and Math and other articles by Cheryl Lowe of Memoria Press

In Defense of Classical Education by Tracy Lee Simmons (excerpt from his book Climbing Parnassus, which I am currently in the middle of)

comparison of traditional (Latin-centered) classical ed and neoclassical ed (such as Well Trained Mind)

Latin here begins when the kids are very young, with Catholic prayers and music.

Same here, via a local Tridentine Mass. My 11 yo ds and 13 yo dd are also taking an LPH course on the Latin Mass, and that has been helpful to understanding the Latin. We also learn some basic songs in Latin: Benedictus qui venit, Christus vincit, Tantum Ergo, Dona Nobis...most of these (except Tantum Ergo) can be learned as rounds. Also, Taize has other simple Latin tunes that are quite lovely. This is a fun way to teach them how to wrap their little tongues around the different pronounciation.

I used Our Roman Roots for a little "Latin Lite" when my children were about 9, 10 or so, which I liked (but have neglected with the younger set ).It focuses on prayers, Latin sayings and a little peripheral introduction to Latin grammar. I like it. I'll probably go back to that with my 11 yo in the Fall. The older set moved onto a year or two of, what's that book, "The Latin Road to English Grammar" or something like that? It was a step beyond "Latin Lite" and was good. Then, they racheted up to Henle (with a tutor) in conjunction with Seton, then, most recently, with the highly recommended Latin classes taught by Linda Robinson at Regina Coeli.

There are many ways to skin a cat!

Latin here... PL with a 6 y.o. and a 1.2 y.o. They are now on LCI... incidentally... the (now) 2 y.o. just 'picks it up' along the way. Much to my amusement, yesterday in the Cracker Barrel she stopped eating to recite the table blessing in Latin

Lissa,

What do you think about In Defense of Classical Education? I've heard mixed reviews.

Anne Marie in NM (actually in Indianapolis for the International Science & Engineering Fair. . . isn't the internet great?)
