Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A year an a half ago, I started Karate. I joined as a way to morally support my dd who was taking it for self-esteem issues. It has helped her some. I took Tae Kwon Do as a teen, and I do enjoy it.

It has been really challenging. Remembering sequences of movements is not my forte what so ever. In the year, I have earned 3 new belts_white->yellow->orange->green. Faster than anticipated.

I have been asked if I would consider working to my black belt!!!!

Dh laughed and laughed, he says to get a black belt I'm going to have to be able to do more than 1 pushup on my toes.

I'm terrified to get my next belt, expectations are much higher, and I'd have to find a way to train more often.

The sequence is blue->Brown->possibly brown stripe ->black And since I'm not a teen, I could be at the brown belt in about a year and a bit's time if I can wrap my head around the idea.

I don't know how I feel about it. I know the club would love to have a female black belt, as it gives the little girls a visual that it's possible. They like having me assisting already, as it's 3 dads and some teens, and 2 college students. A mom makes it seem more possible to the kids. But I really don't know if I can do it! They can grade me only to brown/brown stripe, the organization head would do the next grading. there is only 1 or 2 opportunities a year for the black belts.

I'm really thankful for this club. I trust the black belts. It helps that I have known one 11 years, another 6 years, from different parts of our lives where our paths have crossed. I am comfortable training there. I didn't really think I'd go as far as i have right now. And I did it in good time according to them.

I guess this could be a personal goal. I don't often set any for myself, normally too many interruptions.

I think I'd like to go for it.... is it insane to try to get a black belt in your 40's?

Thank you for the encouragement!

I guess I need to really think this out. This would entirely be something for me. It doesn't affect my family at all, except maybe make mom may need to be taken a little more seriously..lol. DS18 wants to wrestle, and isn't to keen on the fact that mom can and will pin him down if he gets to pushy.

I will need to get stronger, more fit. This isn't a bad thing! But there's an easy 40 lbs that needs to be lost. That will make it all easier without that extra.

So, I guess I need to work on learning what I need to get the next belt in class, and work on my fitness and nutrition at home.

I did work out this morning. I'm a nice shade of red right now..lol.

I don't know! This is almost momentous for me to even consider it!

Great idea! One thing I've liked about our area martial arts is that people of all ages are participating. It does make it more accessible for girls to see a mom out there.

Go for it!!!

A woman in my son's karate class is in her 60s with a black belt! 40 is not too old at all.

Ok, I'm feeling it today!!

Another day, and I should start feeling better...just in time to work out again.

I decided to...

GO FOR IT!!!

Worst case scenario, I get more fit! Not a bad scenario. I am going to see if I can get my blue belt at this grading. Need to sharpen my memory for all my patterns.

I am trying to come up with a plan of attack. Short of making time to practice and improve my technique, i can't speed up the process. From now to black belt, i'd estimate 4 years at best. Not something that is fast. At blue it will be at least a year to brown. Brown to brown stripe likely 18 months and then close to the same from the next. So it is what it is.

But I am going to stick it out! These are things I can do that will help me be able to improve what I do at karate. It is a non-profit organization, so we don't have lots of time in the dojo. I will assist 2-3x a month teaching, and then only 1 training day a week. So it isn't much training time. BUT I can do somethings to improve my own fitness level, which can only help at karate.

1 - regular work out! I have a few dvds I plan to use. So i don't need to leave home to do it. I started yesterday. I am very sore!

2 - clean up our eating. I want to have more whole foods in the house and eliminate lots of the junk

3 - take off some weight.

They all work together.

I want to see what 'open gym' time is at our fitness center. I would be game to go spend a couple hours a week there with space to practice if it was quiet.

Not sure what else I can do, it will be an exercise in discipline and patience!

Thank you. Ok. I have learned that the worst day is 2 days after a hard work out, day 3 morning was hard, but by evening things are easing up. Day 4 I can feel the muscles yet, but it's almost gone. Hopefully recovery will be faster.

Also walking helps stretch out the muscles gently.
