I apologize if this has already been posted but I wanted to make sure you all knew about the deal Amazon is offering right now to get free, professional audible recordings of classic books. I have no idea if this is a permanent arrangement but they are promoting their new "Whispersync for Voice" capability where you can switch between reading a book on your Kindle and listening to the audio without losing your place.

Here is the list for the free books. You "buy" the Kindle version of the book--it's free so you aren't spending any money. Then on the "thank you" page there is a link over to the right to "buy" the audible version at audible.com. That is also free. You don't need to own a Kindle--I just use a Kindle app. I do have an Audible account but I don't have a paid membership.

Happy shopping--I just got hundreds of dollars worth of audiobooks free!

I was up last night with a horrible case of insomnia and saw your post Susan and spent a good 25 minutes "buying" on both Amazon and Audible. Thank you so much for the heads up!

We just downloaded a book onto my dd's kindle. We clicked on the audible version, thinking we could all listen to it on a trip we are planning. BUT, we can't figure out how to get the audible version to work. Help?

Do you have an Audible account? I think you have to actually "buy" the Audible version as well. Audible and Amazon are linked, now, so you can use the same login and I think Audible will know that you already own the Kindle version.

As for how to get the Audible version to actually play, I don't own a Kindle myself--I listen to them in an Audible app. You might just google it if you need a particular software tutorial.

 Hope that helps!

Thanks, she figured it out. We thought it would download onto the Kindle like a book. But, as you said Susan, we just needed to go through Audible and now we're all set.

I have to thank you again, Susan! I've "bought" pretty much the whole list, because -- well, it's free! And who knows when someone's going to need to listen to those books?

I sent the link to my college daughter, who has to read Moby Dick this semester. She was jazzed by the idea of listening to it first . . . and she also loves Edith Wharton, so I'm sure she'll be glad to see House of Mirth on the list. I also sent it to my 9th grader (yeah, we live in the same house and communicate by email between upstairs and downstairs . . . ), who'll enjoy some of these.

I had downloaded and was listening to Moby Dick in the kitchen the other night while I was cooking -- last time I read it was sophomore year in college, and I had not exactly enjoyed it. But the reviews remarking that Melville was funny piqued my interest, so I put it on. Before long, I was totally caught up in the story -- and so was my 3rd-grade daughter, even though I'm sure she didn't follow any of Ishmael's long asides. So score! It's a rainy week, so I'll have to turn it on again some afternoon and see who bites.

Anyway, thank you again for announcing this -- truly a public service.

 Sally

Just an FYI to those of you who bought. If you weren't a member, then likely, like me, you automatically were signed up for a gold membership for one month for free. Then after a month you will be charged $15. I am about to cancel mine as it will add a credit/charge on Oct. 15. So check your audible account to make sure. :) I just used my 2 credits and made sure my items were actually saved in itunes so that I didn't lose the items.
