Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

If we head into Washington DC for a Saturday in a few weeks, what is the best spot to take the kids.....Which museum?? the National Zoo? It will be only for the day.

Weather will be an issue at that time of year. Make a rain plan in advance so the kids won't be disappointed if plans have to change.

The Zoo is gorgeous in the fall...and it's nice to be there when the summer crowds are gone.

Most kids love Air & Space best out of all the Smithsonian museums, with Natural History (dinosaurs! insects! Hope Diamond!) coming in second. Both will be crowded but well worth your time.

If you have money to spare, the National Spy Museum is also fun for kids. The Newseum bills itself as kid-friendly (and it is), but since the focus is on news, younger children might not see the point of the whole place.

In nice weather, it's fun to take a picnic and eat on the Mall or near the memorials. (Cheaper, too!)

What are your children's interests? It's hard to pick for just one day. If you do "the mall" there are many choices of museums all in walking distance. We have done Air and Space, American History, and some of the art museum in one day, and my guys were pretty you g. We paced ourselves and picked exhibits they enjoyed and had lunch and snack breaks.

The zoo is nice, but it's best to get in the morning when the animals are active.

I like the natural history except that it is so immersed in evolution as fact...every part of it. I'm not a young earth theorist but I also don't believe in billions and billions of years.

You could spend a lot of time in their cool geology exhibit and the Insect Zoo...that would help avoid all the evolution stuff.

Jenn's right, early morning and later afternoon (4:00) are the best times to be at the National Zoo.

The Capitol tour is pretty impressive. You'd have to eat your picnic before your tour (no food, water bottles, etc.) and you have to book the tour in advance, but it's a lovely building and it's so important to our nation. I've done that tour with children as young as six.
