Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dd is extremely active, and she has asthma and a bunch of allergies.

She gets sinus infections about twice a year (she has one now) and a friend suggested I look into homeopathic remedies, since the antibiotics aren't working very quickly. We're military, so going to a homeopathic doctor would be an out-of-pocket expense I'd prefer to avoid.

I'm sure there are easy ways to boost immunity via diet and vitamins...I just don't know what they are and what is appropriate for a younger teen.

I do know she'd love to feel better and would prefer not to take any more meds than she already has to.

All suggestions welcome!

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for...but I will throw it out there anyway. I have had wonderful success with curing sinus infections with Silver.

The first sinus infection I had in my early 30's when I was pregnant with my third. I had no idea what I had for over 3 weeks! I couldn't move my head it hurt so bad. When I was talking to an old friend on the phone she thought what I had sounded like a sinus infection. I had the silver on hand in took a tablespoon twice a day and it was gone in a few days.

I have only gotten them a few times since but now I know what to look for and I take the silver right away and it never gets bad. I will also say that a neti pot works well, especially with a bit of silver in the water.

As for the homeopath, I would not recommend doing to much on your own. For homeopathy to be truly helpful I think it's prudent to see a trained homeopath. I have done this and had amazing success. I was due to have bunion surgery because I was having so much pain. As a last ditch effort I went to a wonderful homeopath. In about 6-8 weeks I was out of pain with no surgery (and it has never returned in 10 years) !!!!!!

My number one suggestion for all those things would be vitamin C. It's pretty safe, you can't really overdose though you can have intestinal issues from taking larger doses. I use about 4000mg a day in 3 doses to mainly eliminate hay fever. You might look into one of the buffered C's for a sensitive stomach.

My second is bromelain. It's an enzyme from pineapple (eating fresh pineapple will work too). It help reduce swelling and heal soft tissue injury. But that also means it reduces swelling in the sinuses and maybe in the airway? I don't know that but I've seen the effects of using it on injuries, surgury, childbirth and sinuses and I'd highly recommend it. Considering her activity I'd probably look at a low dose all the time and bump that up for injury or if sinus problems are brewing.. oh and I'd see if it did seem to help the asthma and act accordingly for that. Of course some people can't have pineapple and if it's an allergy of course avoid it, if it's the acidity, I don't think the pwd bromelain in capsules has the acidity of the fruit so you might try it slowly.

The last is what I do for keeping illness at bay. I use elderberry. It's an anti-viral specific for the flu virus. It's the fruit of the elderberry bush.. people make jelly (yummy!) and wine from it etc. So I consider it again a fairly safe item to use. I get it in tincture form (you don't have to take as much as with an extract). I have everyone take a dose after we've been out and about where it's typical to pick something up or there's a lot of sickness going around. Also if there's a lot of illness in the community I carry hand sanitizer in the van so that when we leave somewhere we can use that.. and then, of course, wash hands properly at home too.

Most people who advocate mega-dosing Vit. C recommend taking it "to bowel tolerance" when treating an infection. The reasoning is that your body can absorb more when you need more (people find that they can take much more without any bowel problems when ill), and loose stools is an indicator that you've taken all you can absorb right then. It isn't a science as some forms are harsher than others. I like Emergen-C because it is easy to use, but I have friends who use Sodium Ascorbate Powder and mix it into other things to take, especially if treating an illness. For a therapeutic preventative, Emergen-C is probably the easiest form.

I would also recommend a high quality cod liver oil, or in the very least, a high quality Vit. D supplement. Vit. D is essential for your immune system to function, and while the commonly held reason there is a cold and flu season is because people are inside and germs spread more readily, it is much more likely it is because people are not getting sun exposure in the winter and are more deficient in Vit. D.

Second the Vitamin D- that seems to be a big factor in warding off illness, as Lindsay said.
