Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've done a search and can't find a thread for favorite picture books about the rainforest.

We are beginning a rainforest unit in the next couple weeks and am looking for fun picture books for my 2 first graders.

The Great Kapok Tree is a wonderful book that introduces the animals of the rain forest, but it has a very environmentalist slant. That was OK with me, but could bother others.

Joann,

I don't have time to link but we are studying South america right now and found a ton of resources if you search south america in the archives.

A few books we are using are:
Nature's Green Umbrella by Gail Gibbons
A is for Anaconda (Sleeping Bear press) by A. Fredericks
The Umbrella by Jan brett (Don't forget Jan has a ton of coloring pages on her website)
Also just a heads up, most books on Brazil have a lot of info on the rainforest if you want some non fiction tossed in there.

IIRC, Verdi is based in the tropical rain forest. It would make a great addition to your unit because most rain forest books are about the rain forest and/or its animals in general, but this is a specific living story about one creature. Janell Cannon is a fantastic author and I love all of her books; they are the ultimate blend of story delight and education in the picture book world.

One other thing, I always want to encourage people who study the rainforest... Don't forget about temperate rainforests! I live on the Olympic Peninsula and am constantly amazed at the riches and mystery of the beautiful Olympic Rainforest. While I don't know of any children's books that discuss it, I do think it's an important little tangent to at least bring up. So many people forget that there is a fantastic, unique ecosystem right here in the PacNW. Here is a link for a brief overview that you may find useful.
