Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am finally coming up for air over here!!! AND....I just posted the first of a series of posts on my experiences at Ambleside Summer Institute. It was a great experience, and I know I can't capture all of it in a few posts, but I hope someone can benefit from what I learned there.

I want to add that I am no Charlotte Mason expert (not like Mackfam!!! ), although I have read extensively and used a lot of CM approaches/ideas over the many years of homeschooling. This conference really clarified for me so many of CM's ideas and how and why to implement her approach in the home.

I do think the Institute is geared mainly for the school setting (as this is where all the Ambleside teachers are trained in CM methods). I am fortunate at this point to be able to combine all my boys in most subjects, while my oldest-at-home dd is really on her own now as a senior in high school. If I could not, I would have to have a few more ideas on how to manage multiple levels simultaneously. In that case, I do think some accommodations to the method would be needed.

I posted today on the philosophies of education Dr. St. Cyr described; tomorrow I'll try to post on approaches to authority and then a post on "atmosphere, discipline, and life", before I go on to specifics in techniques--which I know is everyone's main interest! However, without understanding the ideas that underlie CM's techniques, I think it would be difficult to apply those techniques consistently.

Great post Caroline!

I think it is very important to understand those underlining principals before the methods can truly make sense and be used accordingly. I know that as hs parents we get caught up on the nitty gritty sometimes because we are used to the educational paradigms we were raised with (whether teacher or child centered). The idea that immediate results should be tangible and visible holds us captive when it comes to our children's education. Dh and I certainly were like this when we started hs. Fast track to our sixth year and what we have seen/learned in just a few years of CM and our whole perspective is different.

I'm looking forward to reading your other posts

Thank you for the post! I found the distinctions very helpful, both in my planning of our homeschooling and in the way I describe CM to friends and family. And I am eagerly awaiting the rest of the series--the training sounds like it was great!
