Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Help!?!

I have been living with chronic pain for over 5 years and had many health problems before that. It's a long story, so I won't go into it all.   After all of this time I am finally getting some answers from a Holistic Doctor. However, as with all good things it's slow. The pain is really getting to me---especially as we are getting back in to school!

To try to alive the pain I have been considering trying Treager Massage.

I have used Holistic approaches in the past and as my understanding and Faith has grown I have seen that not all is based on God! After backing away from anything like this for many years---and living in pain because no western med doctor could figure out what is wrong I confused as what to do.

At the moment I don't totally buy the statement that everything "holistic" is evil. But, I would really appreciate if anyone know of a Holy Priest and is familiar with this type of discussion I could as for some help in discernment.

If anything that I do is in conflict with the Catholic Church I will drop it in a second (as I have in the past). However, if Jesus can use some form of massage or treatment to bring about healing---I would really like that.

I KNOW that this type of discuss can become heated. I do not desire for that to happen.

Thanks in advance!

ETA: I updated my question below with a better assessment of what I need to discern.

Oh Betsy, I'm so sorry to hear about your pain. Chronic pain is so difficult.

I have not heard of Trager Massage. I have contacted Susan Brinkmann on the Women of Grace blog and Father Mitch Pacwa for help in discerning some other areas on whether they were New Age or not.

Not knowing what your pain is, I don't know if this will be helpful, but Pain Free and other books by Pete Egoscue has been really helpful to many local Catholic friends, including my mother. The techniques are based on physical posture, nothing mind/body/unconscious mind. The only book I wouldn't recommend is "Pain Free Living".

There are many alternatives out there that don't fall into the new age trap. Like many things.. there are good things there, it's what people want to drape around it with regards to beliefs and what they are inviting into their lives that may cause problems. I like to keep in mind that just because some can twist something to their use it doesn't make every use twisted. We don't give up good things just because someone can take a good thing and twist it into something that isn't good. Sometimes if you look for a Christian practitioner you can avoid some of the problems right from the start.. but it's always a good idea to talk with the practitioner so that you can find out if they've shed any new agey attributes or just made excuses to themselves and use them anyway.

I think Jenn's suggestion are good for helping discern which is what.

Jodie thanks for putting into words what I couldn't in my original post. That is what is hard to discern. Is this a "good" that is being hijacked by New Age people or is bad on it's own merit.

It's easy to throw the baby out with the bath water on these types of discussions.

I am open to any more help. But I think I will for sure contact Susan and possible Fr. Mitch.

Exactly. That's why it's always helpful to get recommendations from local friends for medical professionals and alternative practitioners. There are many techniques that aren't New Age-y at all that can be very, very helpful.

One thing I've done over the past few years is contact my local Catholic homeschool co-op when looking for recommendations (car repair, orthodontist, hair stylist, you name it). Anyone who's happy with professional services is normally pleased to offer recommendations. (And vice versa, which is also useful!)

I will be praying for you as you look for ways to alleviate your chronic pain.

I wanted to make an update to my original post. After thinking about this last night for quite a while, I think I finally realized what I needed to discern.

First I don't believe that Western Med is the holy grail of medicine. I also don't believe that everything Holistic is New Age or evil. I believe that there is some middle ground that provides real healing in union with God's Designs.

So, at this moment, I believe that for true healing the body needs to be treated as a whole. I also believe that health problems can stem from past emotional hurts.

So, first and foremost, I need to discern if these two statements are correct or at least not in contradiction with Church teaching.

Second, if emotional hurts can cause health problems how does one deal with the hurt to heal the problem? Also, what if you don't really know what the hurt is to forgive or deal with to receive healing?   Is there a powerful unconscious mind that can easily be talked to to tell it to forgive the hurt and beginning healing?   I think that these are the questions that I need to discern first (with the help of someone with more knowledge of theology and the New Age movement).

After I have discern this I think then (and only then) can I begin to discern individual treatments.

Anyway....I just wanted to clarify my thinking and my question.
