This week there will be a decision made at the church that will affect dd15. She is wanting to convert. Our church is set up that the children's RCIA program cuts off at 14 yo.
I've spoken to Sister C. about an exception to the rule, as I am not comfortable with dd15 being with the adults. She was going to call the Archdiocese, but the call never happened. As well, since most of the RCIA for children are under 10, we're not sure how much she'd gain from the program, as she has been in a Catholic school since K, and already is familiar with all the content.
Two weeks ago, at a going away party for our seminarian(we miss him so much already), dd15 came along as she was really fond of him from the youth group. The topic came up that she is in a limbo state, I joked with the Seminarian, that he should put together a test for dd15 so that she could become a full member of the Catholic church. If she has to attend with the adults, it won't happen, it's not the right place for her. The youth director agreed 100% as there are sometimes people from halfway houses. The Seminarian said that wasn't the case here, but with the adults, they come with many issues, anger and resentment that they want to address and many topics discussed just aren't appropriate or relevant for the tenderness of a 15yo child. The seminarian jokingly said that the parish should call the seminary and assign him to do RCIA with dd15. DD15 loved that idea as he is very good with the teens, but it's somewhat impractical.
Last night after 2 weeks of prayers that something happens, with the intention of calling this morning, the youth director approached me, we should know this week if her plan would be approved. The head pastor and Sister(who is in charge of Sacramental prep for the parish) have approved it, we are waiting on the return of the associate pastor(who is in charge of overseeing the youth programs) to see if he'll approve it. If he does, then they will speak to the Bishop to get their planned approved. It is a wonderful way for dd15 to receive her sacraments. She won't be with the adults, and won't be a year with young children. She'd have to spend 1 day a month with the youth director, attend the catechism youth group sessions, and then the confirmation classes(with 12+ kids).
I'm so grateful that the parish is trying to find a way to help us. I never really asked for this, I was just trying to see if there was a in between group for the older teens. I think there isn't because after a certain age, you normally lose the window of opportunity. It disproves the outsider opinion that the church is rigid and unbending. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about our parish, even more so now.
Please pray with me, that this alternate program will go through for us. It would be so wonderful to have dd15 with us at the church with us as a full member. This option could benefit other teens that are making choices, but aren't comfortable being with the adults. I fear that if they don't dd15 will never join us.
********Update********
After a pretty crumby day yesterday, we finished on a high note. I received a call from the youth coordinator. Her plan has been approved!!!! There have been a few tweaks, as well, the seminarian I referred to earlier, actually put together a course for another teen last year, and upon his departure, he left a copy at the parish so it could be used. We only found out about this, it was after the going away party, so it is almost like he did it for dd15. The coordinator also said that if there is a conflict with anything, we'll work it out, as teens have harder schedules to work with. So true.
I'm so happy.
The only cloud here, is dh isn't sure this is what dd wants. She told him she didn't want to last year when her sisters were going to the classes. I haven't had a chance to talk with her, as she has a friend sleeping over, but the moment I did have, she was excited. I asked why she'd told her dad no, and me yes. She said it was months ago,"now it's with Angela." Her choice last year choice was with little kids, or older adults, now she'll be with the youth coordinator, and for 4 days, with some jr. high kids, as well as they are using part of the Youth Group curricula, so she has some 'mandatory' days at her beloved youth group. Very excited. I will talk with her, and make sure I have her commitment. We may start the process as early as next week.
Please keep her in your prayers, that her commitment stands firm for the year. And for her dad to let this happen, and for his conversion as well.

Very good news! So glad that they were able to work out a plan for her that will work better for her than putting her in such disparate groups.
