UGH...refrigerator is DEAD. IT must have quit 2 days ago so I have some food that is totally gone. Again.
I cannot afford an appliance that has temper tantrums. I need a new one. I wouldn't mind if it were a professional-grade one. I just don't want it to QUIT on me!! Any suggestions on a good RELIABLE brand and features to consider?? TBTG we were too tired to go grocery shopping last night. Oh, and one more thing, I need to be able to afford the mother-ship I have to purchase to hold food for 11 people.
What ever happened to the fridge my grandmother had that ran strong for 50 years??!!
Are professional appliances worth it? Any tips on doing this on the cheap?
TIA!!

For now I would try craigslist and get something for your stopgap measure. I can't find it now but last night I just read a blog post about finding a new refrigerator. She talked about professional appliances having FAM that runs constantly so there's a buzzing noise all the time. I'll post it when I have a minute.

Our GE Profile has been going strong for 12 years now. I'm sure it's not available anymore, but they might have something comparable. My great Aunt had a GE fridge/freezer, the one with the freezer on the bottom a shelf area and then an upper refrigerator like this, although in white. I loved that appliance and it's still working today at a cousin's house.

It's not very helpful except giving reasons why Professional doesn't work in a home kitchen. http://www.theartofdoingstuff.com/the-nicest-refrigerators-i n-the-landaccording-to-me/

I've heard that appiances are made now to only last about 10 yrs of normal use. Luckily refrigerators are used about the same by larger and average sized families. Things like dishwashers.. average family uses it once a day.. large homeschooling families use it 3-4 times a day.. and it's only made to last for 10 yrs of average use.. cut the time it lasts by 4.
But anyway.. it may be worth it to find an older fridge and have it repaired... but it would likely need to be 15 yrs old or so to start with.
The problem is that people with fridges that have lasted.. have had that fridge for 10+ years and a new model may well not last as long as the older model.
I've been very happy with the largest side by side frigidaire we got about 9 or 10 years ago. I've had to replace some of the shelving parts (gotta get those toddlers to stop climbing on them.. but you get one trained and got another starting it ) But no issues with it functioning or the icemaker (though again the outer parts don't take the abuse of many small children well.. does anything?)

I looked into professional/industrial appliances years ago, and looked into everything including True refrigerators. Lots of discussion and first-hand experience with different fridges at the Gardenweb Appliance forum if you ever want to do research there. Several of the comments that helped me with the decision is that if you go commercial you have to deal with
1) noise, already mentioned here
2) the glass front is really attractive, but only if you keep your fridge neat and clean, since everything can be seen.
3) the shelves may not be what you're used to -- the commercial lines usually have racks instead of glass shelves.
4) electricity -- some of them cost more to run because they may not be as environmentally friendly as those designed for the home.
Another consideration, although this probably applies more to stoves/ranges than refrigerators is insurance. Commercial appliances aren't designed for the home so supposedly you might have trouble having your insurance replace them or your home if something goes wrong and you have a fire, etc.

I have a HUGE Amana that we've had for ~7 years. Very happy with it. But if I needed a new one I would get something smaller.
