Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know if there was a thread about books/papers on true feminity? When my son did conformation prep I had him do TOB/Virtues work with his Dad as part of that--alongside the other cofirmation stuff. I would like to do soemthing similar with my daughter but she is a bit younger, 8th grade and more of an 'old soul': loves books on saints, old prayer books and such. I think the TOB stuff would not suit her. I do like JP II On the Dignity of Women which I may go through with her. Any other things come to mind?

I'll have to give this some thought, but I have a few ideas straight off. These come from my own journey, as I don't have girls to give that perspective:

Alice von Hildebrand (her's husband's work, too):
The Privilege of Being a Woman

and her By Love Refined: Letters to a Young Bride

Her husband's book: Man and Woman.

And also his book on Marriage: The Mystery of Faithful Love.

and his In Defense of Purity.

They are philosophers, so this is meaty stuff, but you might get some inspiration and find some will be easier for her to read than others. They might be too much, as in mature writing, not graphic. Preview them first.

The Catholic Girl's Guide by Father Lasance:
Announcing "A Maiden's Wreath"

Confirmation Prep

where to get a copy and best reprint is the most recent conversation.

True TOB written by JPII is most reverent and preserves the sacred intimacy. I've had this conversation several time in the past week about how what is presented as TOB doesn't match JPII to me. These new books are more graphic, sometimes irreverent and crass, and focus on the secondary effects of marriage instead of the primary.

Saints Books:
I was just reviewing Ablaze: Stories of Daring Teen Saints and found the lives presented there very well done. It isn't written in "let's hang it all out there and be graphic". I think the discussion questions or thoughts were weak, so I would skip that, but I'm happy to recommend an saint book that would inspire a teenager.

The life of Maria Goretti is such a good one to read at this age (In Garments All Red). Others that impressed me were St. Bernadette (a biography by Rene Laurentin really made an impression on me). St. Joan of Arc, St. Gemma Galgani, St. Therese, St. Teresa...except the latter, all young women saints.

Modesty/Purity
I really like It's So You! by Mary Sheehan Warren. I think it presents wonderful practical advice on applying modesty to real life.

On Being Feminine in Catholic Sense
I'm going to throw in three booklets that are older, but very encompassing to me about true femininity

The Task of Woman in the Modern World

Women and Post-War Reconstruction

This one was written in 1965, Bright and Cheerful Homes

Marriage
To discuss marriage, two books that are my favorite:

Three to Get Married by Fulton J. Sheen
Msgr. Cormac Burke's book on Marriage, Covenanted Happiness

Other Inspiration
Some other books you might be able to draw out a few things:

Essays on Woman by Edith Stein
Books by Kimberly Hahn
Courageous Series from Emmaus Road Publishing

I'd also consider throwing in some books by religious or religious life. It's not to have her consider a vocation, exactly, but to get a feminine perspective from a different angle. All books by Mother Mary Francis are wonderful, and A Right to Be Merry is totally appropriate for this age. Shepherd's Tartan by Sister Mary Jean Dorcy is another I read at her age.

I'll have to think some more....I'm sure there will be great suggestions from other members. Suzanne and Jen, this is right up your alley!

This thread might help, too: Book for girls and preparing for puberty

Catholic Heritage Curricula has some books on this topic. I know nothing about them, but maybe someone else here has read them.
