I have a major diet dr pepper addiction! I think admitting it is the first step. Anyway, to save money and my health I want to move towards drinking more tea and coffee and less soda. One problem . . . . . I can't seem to find things I like to drink.

I like cold coffee or coffee drinks that are cold with added flavors (you know the ones with all the sugar and cream). I can't drink a cup of hot coffee. Any ideas on how to enjoy coffee or recipes for cold coffee drinks? I am going to a B&B soon and I plan to experiment since they will have coffee there. Perhaps put it on ice with some flavored creamers. (I don't have a coffee maker . . . yet.)

I will drink regular tea, but I dislike hot tea, green tea, and some flavor teas. But, yet I want some variety. I have a raspberry flavor tea that I like, but everytime I make it, it taste different and I can't make it like my aunt did when I fell in love with it. I love Crystal Light Peach tea, but I want to replace this. The same brand of raspberry tea I like comes in peach too, but it was not good.

Maybe I am just not a tea and coffee drinker, but I want to try! Any suggestions?

I like exactly the same things you describe liking (except that I will drink hot tea- though I prefer it iced) so maybe our palates are similar... Here's what works for me:

-Chai tea (brewed according to directions) poured over ice with an equal amount of skim milk.
-Celestial Seasonings blueberry tea (iced, no sweetener- it takes a little getting used to, but it's kind-of tangy and nice).
-Bigelow vanilla almond tea (hot with a little bit of sugar).

And I'm in Georgia, so of course I drink a LOT of sweet tea.

I am an "almost" recovered Diet Coke addict. Seriously, the Nutrasweet must be addicting. I rarely drink the DC now, and when I do, I have a headache and problems the very next day.

Anyway, my tastebuds are NOT drinking those iced coffees. When I was younger I couldn't stand the thought of drinking hot coffee, but somehow taught myself to do it, and I do enjoy coffee in the morning and decaf cups at night. More in the winter.

I cannot stomach tea of any kind, hot or cold. That would be the logic choice to substitute the DC, but just can't do it. Herbal or fruity teas if they don't have the green or regular kind of tea leaves I can handle.

So, I figured some of the cravings for Diet Coke is the carbonation. I like the texture, so I've substituted that for sparkling mineral water or soda water, adding fruit flavors for zest. I like it straight out of the bottle or over ice. Also what is delicious is the Izze drinks, although they are high in carbs, so make my sugars a bit high, so I have to watch when I drink them.

I had bad habits of going through drive-thrus to get a Diet soda. Some of my breaking this has been ordering a cup of soda water -- many of these soda fountains have a setting for that.

Good luck. I think the big change is just going off the nutrasweet in all drink choices, or you will keep going back for more.

A friend of mine was just telling me how she got over her Diet Pepsi addiction. Her son wanted a soda stream for his bday. So she thought this is a good time to get off the Pepsi.

For her it is the carbonation and she has carbonated with a little lemon juice added.

I'm going to put it on my Christmas list too

Just wanted to say that this is how my mom kicked her soda habit too--sparkling waters! It feels like a nice treat kind of beverage without adding sugar, calories, caffeine, etc. I love sparkling water with lime squeezed in.

If you like cold coffee, I wouldn't buy a coffee maker. Iced coffee is much better if you cold brew it.

I can very much relate to this. I gave up a few years back and have never touched it since but I noticed during the time I was close to giving up, that on the days I would drink it, the next day my blood sugars were all over the place and I was craving more food and usually poorer choices, I think that observation was the final straw.

To cut down on the soft drink craving in summer I've used freshly squeezed lime juice in cold water, it stopped the 'hit' I was desiring from the carbonation. I can't figure why that would help, but it did.

I've just come off tea and coffee at present as well after a very bad run of winter flu and while my body was recovering and not craving coffee in particular, I switched over to slippery elm powder and I now make that into a 'tea'.

Cassie, I like the suggestions others have made of a sparkling water drink, or a slice of lime in a glass of water. That is what the "healthy me" drinks.

However, I am on a blender kick, and I thought I'd share what I'm doing. For a green tea drink: green tea, honey to taste, some sweetened soymilk (or unsweetened and a bit of sugar), and ice. Blend it up, and they will foam a bit. It feels decadent.    You could probably use regular milk instead of the soy.

You could also do this with coffee, but I would skip the honey. I think the flavors would clash. It's really nice with the green tea, though.

My soda craving is also more for the carbonation than anything else. I love the sparkling waters, and use as a treat, but for cost savings I just focus on drinking more water (we have a house filter). We are also huge iced tea drinkers, but I am trying to cut back on that habit as well.

You can also use sparkling water in juices like orange, grape, and apple (or others that you prefer). It cuts the sugar and calories of the juice since you only use about half a normal serving size.

Those soda stream products look interesting!

I enjoyed a small cup of coffee this morning. It was good! Taste much better than the last time I tried it. Of course, it may have been all the chocolate flavor creamer that I used. I have yet to read the ingredients list to see what is in the coffee mate. But, I could drink coffee like this! Off to get another cup! Perhaps your taste change as you get older . . . . . or it was just the chocolate.

I have never seen sparkling water at the grocery store, but will need to check it out.

Thanks everyone!
