Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ok so I know this is a strange topic And I am not sure if this is the right forum but here goes...

I find myself yawning during prayer at times. It is not when I am tired or exclusively at night. Today it happened while I was in the doctors office waiting. I didn't yawn before or after I prayed. I only yawned during the prayer which happened to be a prayer of deliverance for my son. And it wasn't just one yawn, it was a series of yawns.

I have also had this happen at Mass especially during the Nicene Creed or the consecration. It is strange. While I am at it I will share another yawning phenomenon- My family is Italian and many in it believe in the malochhio. Not sure if I spelled that correctly but it is translated "the evil eye". In my family/culture it is what happens when someone "looks" at you and says you are beautiful or something like that without saying "God bless you" or something similar. It is tied in to envy and can afflict little babies as well as adults. Many of you may think I am crazy but I assure you I am not. My mom says prayers when people have headaches or when one of the children is very cranky for no reason. I have experienced healing my self and have seen my own children get better after crying spells, etc. I have even learned the prayer myself many years ago although I hardly ever say it. The reason I mention it now is that when someone has "the eyes" the person saying the healing prayers to remove it always yawns and experiences tears in their eyes. Many times when I have this type of headache I will yawn myself.

My grandmother did not condone this type of prayer and called it superstition. I assure you there is something to it, but I am wondering if it is fact evil. I was comforted by the fact that I was yawning during prayer but now I am not sure what to think. I am really hoping there is someone on this forum that has any inkling as to what I am talking about. To the rest of you, please don't think I am crazy

Any help/thoughts/comments will be most appreciated!

St. Therese used to complain that she always fell asleep during prayer. Maybe God is just giving you a lot of peace in your soul and it relaxes you.

I'm not sure about the evil eye. I'm not Italian though!

Yawing is an involuntary physical action. The Italian superstitions arose from not being able to explain what happens or how yawning occurs. It's contagious for one, and science still can't explain that. Yawning also happens when your body needs more oxygen or is tired out.

Being a mother, I know that prayer or Mass time is one of the few times I'm resting...and I yawn.

Don't think anything of it. If it's not intentional, just shift your body, try to wake up and put yourself in attention at Mass. Sometimes "Brother Ass" is not obedient to your will.

There's an absolutely beautiful story in almost (!) Venerable Fulton J. Sheen's autobiography Treasure in Clay when he had a really busy week, had a quick stop over in Paris (I believe, it's been decades since I've read it) and he was stopping in a church for a holy hour. He then fell asleep for the entire hour -- not on purpose, but his body caught up with him.

He offered it to Jesus, and apologized with great sincerity. The answer he received was that the apostles spent their first holy hour in the Garden of Olives sleeping. Try harder to not fall into sleeping, but do not condemn yourself if you fail at times.

Of course, it's more beautiful to read the original, but it's a thought I've kept all these years.
