Is anyone else having a LOT of stress over this?
I am not talking about the contraceptive mandate, I am pro-life through and through. I participated in the rallys against the mandate.
I am talking more about my fundamental beliefs. I honestly believe that all American citizens have a right to basic healthcare. I do not believe that it is a luxury, or that people who have chosen foolishly to spend their money elsewhere should be allowed to suffer physically (or emotionally for that matter).
For instance, someone who chooses to smoke or drink excessively and then has no money for insurance. Yes, it bothers me, yes, I disagree with their choice, but in my opinion, stupidity doesn't mean society shouldn't still try to improve their health. It is to everyone's benefit to have a healthier society.
Now, my *personal* opinions aside, the problem I am having is that the very women who are my closest friends, that I have the most in common with, disagree with me completely (and vocally). I feel that they have a complete right to their opinions, and I respect them. I do disagree with them, however.
I feel judged by them, even if that is not their intent. :-(
I just feel this so strongly, I have a right to my beliefs as well.
I should add that we were without insurance for years, and my kids are covered by my state insurance. Dh and I have employer insurance, finally (!). We are on the lower end of income, yet feel led to be open to life and homeschool, which has made us mostly a one income family. I am just so confused. I feel God wants us where we are, that our choices have been mostly guided by Him.
Yet now, I am looking at every choice we have made, and seeing them through their eyes, I wonder what they think of me!!!
I am wondering if anyone else is struggling with these issues, and how to deal with it.

I think part of the problem is that this doesn't actually address what you're talking about. This bill will make it illegal not to have insurance.. meaning that it's going to mandate that someone without insurance MUST buy insurance and since most gov't services don't work well with self employment income (like they look only at gross income not net income) it will hit those who are self-employed particularly hard since they don't have a lot of options.
To me what you're saying is that regardless of thier ability to pay they should be able to get health care when they need it. And imo that's not what this whole health care fiasco will accomplish.
Personally, I think it would be better accomplished by going completely opposite of giving everyone health care.. that it's the overhead of insurance and such driving the cost sky high and by eliminating it, it would bring the cost of medical care down to something affordable.
Our end is the same though.. we both want people to be able to get the medical care.

Leocea, I would start with this assumption:

It appears to me that you don't want a political debate with your friends (or this board ) so focus on what all (well, perhaps there is a rare exception) people agree on and want: to care for others in their time of medical need.
It is fine to agree to disagree about the means to get to this end. It is also fine to limit how much you want to get dragged into the debate. Try really hard to not perceive differences of opinion about political (macro level) means to an end as a judgement on you (micro level). Stay objective and focus on the validity of arguments & counter arguments if you so choose to engage
And to answer your original question, no, I'm not stressed. I've been a political junkie for.e.ver! I enjoy the give and take, push and pull. Am I concerned about the consequences of political action in general? You bet. Am I going to lose personal sleep over macro level shenanigans? No way .
Love,

Jodie--For what it is worth my husband is a doctor and totally agrees with you. He runs a 100% pro-life clinic and takes no insurance or state/federal grants. He also sees uninsured--those who make too much to qualify for state healthcare but are self-employed or do not make enough to afford healthcare--for free. Benefactors, or people who pay upfront for care allow him to give away care to the uninsured. This very Catholic model has been successfully run for nearly 10 years in a California clinic and he has been in business for 3 years.

Amen, Jodie and KC.
I don't have advice for you, Leocea, but you have my prayers.

I know what you mean, Leocea. I feel very much the same way. I always tend to see, and be at least partly persuaded by, every side of an argument, with the marked exception of the abortion/pro-life issue. My husband loves all the rough-and-tumble and tussle of political debate, but it makes me feel torn apart and physically ill (and then I need some health care . . . ). And I do know what you mean about feeling judged *as a person* by others because of your inclinations/positions, and having everything in your life combed over for evidence of hypocrisy or whatever. People do do that to each other, and it is the antithesis of charity, in my view.
You have my prayers, too. In every way this is a very difficult season.
Sally

Leocea, just thought of something. Have you maybe read the bishops' statements on healthcare, or maybe sent the link to your friends? Because the Church, and the Bishops have had a long history of working to promote universal health care. We as Catholics are not opposed to health care for all per se, but we are opposed to being coerced to pay for "health care" that's not really health care (i.e., contraception and abortion), among other things. So in a way, we're all on the same page as far as "health care for all" is concerned. We do disagree with how it's being done right now by our government. I hope this helps.
Bishops Seek Health Care That's Universal

Thank you so much ladies!!
Your words and advice have helped put this in perspective. We do all have the same goals, good health for everyone.
Thank you for the links, I will keep all of this in mind while talking with my friends.
It doesn't help that I am almost 29 weeks pregnant and emotional. :-)
