Ladies, I would appreciate your prayers for our American Heritage Girls troop, chartered at our parish. We've been plagued with problems from the beginning (almost 2 years ago now), first in leadership and administration, and now in the way of discipline problems with the girls. I'm one of the unit leaders as well as a troop parent, with my youngest daughter (8) as a member.
There are only 8 girls in the troop, and they're kind of a mixed bag in terms of family background, but basically they're all good kids. Lately, though, we've had a series of incidents that kind of make me tear my hair: girls went into a CCD classroom and lit a candle, girls at a movie night spent time spelling out bad words to each other (this caused one mother to storm out with her child, never to return), and this week, during a bathroom break, girls went into the newly-painted girls' bathroom and scratched their initials on the stall doors. It's all the kind of thing you'd *think* girls aged 8 and up would have the sense not to do, but . . . they do it. Still waiting on consequences for the vandalism; I just emailed our troop coordinator, charter representative, and pastor about that this morning.
Obviously we're trying to do all this character teaching, but sometimes it just seems as though we get pushed ten steps back, in some weird, unexpected way, for every step forward. Right now I'm feeling depressed that apparently 8- and 9-year-old girls can't even go to the bathroom without getting into trouble.
So, we could use some prayers. As a troop we kind of hang by a shoestring anyway, and things like this (deservedly) undermine our standing with the parish, which so graciously hosts us. We want so much to offer a quality program, but it's just seeming as though no good deed goes unpunished . . .
Thank you so much. Please know that I take your intentions to Mass with me every time I go.
Sally

I am sorry this is happening. Praying for these dear little girls whom Jesus loves..."suffer the little children to come unto me". May the girls make good decisions in the future and may all involved in the situation find peace and direction from the Holy Spirit on what to do...and praying for you as your heart must be so heavy.

Is there a lot of unsupervised time, or is that one of the problems you are experiencing (not enough help)?
I hope that the Parish sees this as a ministry opportunity and allows the Troop to continue. These girls seem to be crying out for role models and training, and the Parish is such a great place for these young people to be enveloped with love and forgiveness and guidance.
I'll pray for all involved.

Oh my! I will definitely pray for your troop. We adore our AHG troop and obviously have some problems, but nothing like that.
Could you ask the priest to come and pray with the girls, and to talk about how it is their church and that they need to take care of it.
Maybe have the girls do extra service to make ammends, above and beyond what you would think is necessary typically.

Thanks for your prayers!
I wanted to let you all know that the incident for which I was asking prayers has been resolved. All the girls involved came forward, readily admitting to what they had done (because as it turned out, they see people's initials written/scratched in bathroom stalls everywhere and had no idea that it was wrong to do these things -- so we've had a little teachable moment now). They have performed some community service as a way of making amends, and at least a couple of them have been to confession, too, so that's over and done.
We also just had a VERY successful week of day camp, which I coordinated and directed. The parish hosted us -- we have fairly extensive outdoor property -- and the girls were wonderful all week long! It was a great opportunity to spend some intensive time building our community (with four new girls!), learning new skills, and having fun together. It also gave us a chance, as a fairly new leadership team, to have some of our policies regarding supervision and structure become better-established as habits. This really does seem like a new chapter in our life as a troop, and I want to thank you all so much for your prayers for us.
Sally
