I know Jeanne Bendick was discussed in the OOP Science Authors thread.
I'm looking at the Bethlehem Books Science Page for next year for my 4th Grader. His reading is about 6th grade or above, with comprehension along the same.
Generally, when do you read books like Archimedes and her other ancient Greek stories? We were going to go into ancient Greece and Rome next year, but he'll be a young nine. Just wondering if I'll be pushing it with these titles.
The Mystery of the Periodic Table is one I think we will read, just because of his renewed interest in the Elements and the Table.

My boys loved the Archimedes book when they were nine, so I think it would fit in well with your Ancient Greece study. I found the Mystery of the Periodic Table to be interesting, but drier and more technical. Still, if he is interested in the elements he'll probably enjoy it.
I have a copy of How Much and How Many by Bendrick that I want to read this year to the boys--all about units of measurement and weight. Very interesting!

My son is a year younger than yours, Jenn, and has enjoyed them both as free reading. He often refers to Archimedes when he is constructing something or discussing a tool or machine we come across. He reads at a similar grade level, maybe slightly below, your son, and they were very understandable for him.

oops, I didn't specify what "them both" was. We ordered both Galen and the Gateway to Medicine and Archimedes and the Door to Science from Bethlehem through HS buyer's co-op earlier this year. Those are the two he has read.

I knew what you meant! I wish I could have bought them earlier. Sales seem to come at "tight" times for me.

I'd like to get an e-reader for this upcoming year, now that Bethlehem books has many titles available that way.

Does that give an explanation of time? How did the division of time (seconds, hours, minutes) come about? My son wanted to know why 60 and not in increments of 10. Not sure where to look that up.

In the books we have used for Journey North study, I have seen some looking at clocks and measurement of time. Will have to go back and look at titles to figure out which I liked.

I've had a hard time getting my kids (including my very strong-reader, science-loving boys) into the Jeanne Bendick books on their own for some reason, but as a read-aloud in our Morning Basket, Archimedes was a hit this year, when we were doing Greece. This coming year we're doing Rome, so Galen and the Gateway to Medicine will be one of our science reads in the MB, as will Mystery of the Periodic Table (having the kids read Mary Daly's Introducing the Periodic Kingdom to Its Heirs, one element at a time, for their independent reading/narration).
I've found with MPT, incidentally, that it can be a difficult fit in some ways -- it looks like a younger child's book, so that my rising high-schooler now sort of sniffs at it, but several years ago, when I assigned it to him for independent reading, even though he's quite an advanced reader it was still too dry/technical/something. Too much in one way or another. He must have been about a sixth grader at the time, I'm thinking. So I'm going to do it as a read-aloud with the youngers, so we can go veeeeerrrrrrrrry slowly and digest it bit by bit.

Oh, and re Archimedes, I was doing 2nd and 3rd. I'll be using Galen with 3rd and 4th this year, again as a read-aloud.

 This is on our fall schedule. We started with Galen in (my oldest was 4th grade), Archemedes next and just finishing Periodic Table this year. (We intended to do Herodotus this year but it slipped  )
Jenn, if you can get a hold of some of her earlier work I think you would enjoy it too. My first grader used her All Around You as a science spring board this year an my third grader just finished her illustrated Everyday Weather and How it Works by Herman Schneider.

That book is THERE (not HERE!) with dh, so I had him take a look because I couldn't remember  . There are 12 pages on time, so I think quite a bit of that would be an historical explanation of how the way we measure time came to be.
Also, you might find The Story of Clocks and Calendars by Betsy Maestro to be a good introduction that both of your boys might enjoy. Your library probably has this one. I found it interesting anyway  !
