Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

for American history. My boys have requested hands on stuff. We used History Pockets for Ancient Egypt last year and it was a flop. He said it was too much cutting and pasting and writing. I can't find any books at our library and the only other resources I have on hand suggest dress-up (don't have the clothes for this), cooking foods from the time (I hate to cook more than I have too) or drawing (my oldest hates drawing). Any suggestions?

I know you said you dislike cooking, but my kids have really loved "history lunches" -- we've done Stone Age lunch (stewed fruit, nuts, beef jerky), a Greek Symposium, a Roman lunch . . . We've also tried making meals based on the Little House books. If you don't think of it as making something extra -- just using a mealtime you have to prepare for anyway as a learning time, and involving your kids in the planning and prep -- maybe it wouldn't seem like such a burden.

Otherwise . . . dioramas? Model villages?

Also, the Safari company, which makes those "Toobs" of plastic figures, has at least one American-History "Toob" (Jamestown settlers). You might pair living books from a given period with a playset of figures, set up and available for free play as a response to your reading.

And you can turn the question back to your boys: when they ask for hands-on activities, what do they have in mind?

Sally

How about some colonial games?

One of my soma made a beautifully illustrated Nine Mans Morris game on poster board. It was so wonderful that we covered it with contact paper and still use it as a board game!

Here are more ideas. For games, scroll down a bit.
We have made butter and everyone loved doing that-not too much cooking, really.

Ooh, those games are cool! I'll have to bookmark that for this year's new-world history track!
