Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Friends of ours (dh's best man's brother) just won the This Old House contest for best remodel. They did it all while homeschooling little ones, coordinating an international adoption from Ethiopia, and having a baby! Just incredible and inspiring.

If you know of Dr. John Haas of National Bioethics Council, this is his daughter, Katie.

Wow, that is AMAZING!! And will that money help them remodel the kitchen? $5,000 isn't much for doing a kitchen.

True. But if you are doing the work yourself, it is a good start. We gutted remodeled a smaller kitchen in our old home for about $8000 when we were first married.

Yk, it occurred to me, too. I wonder if they'll sell the truck? Though, I can imagine that it would be nice for Mark to have a luxury item of his own after all that work!

Really, I am just so amazed at how Katie lived that way. As someone who lived through a remodel of a small row home that was in much better shape starting out and who is now in a more generic "fixer-upper," I don't think I could do it. I'm not even sure that I could do the level of remodeling we did at the old house now that my children are older and expected to do some semblance of "real" school.

That said, they both have large, close-knit families that live nearby, not to mention that they are both ridiculously likable so as to have a ton of good friends willing to help them and all enthusiastically supportive of their dream rather than feeling alone with everyone around you thinking you are nuts. It must make a difference in what you think you can do!

I was thinking along these same lines when I tried to imagine doing this--we've wanted to tackle a house remodel, but we just don't have the human resources! Having a support system would make all the difference in the world! It is wearying to always feel you are isolated in the midst of a crowd.

OH WOW!!!! posting this EVERYWHERE, including e-mails to my hubby and sons (who have promised me they'd help with remodeling projects once their Eagle projects are done) and to my cousins and friends who are also into remodeling . that is sooo inspiring. (and sniff, I have to admit I'm envious, as I've always wanted an old Tudor.)

Thanks for sharing, Lindsay.

That's so fabulous! I'll have to send the article along to a friend of mine who used to work for Dr. Haas (and also has a grandchild adopted from Ethiopia!).

I love old houses and live in one, but nothing like that . . . and I agree, I don't think I could live through that kind of renovation, either. I painted and did minor things in our much-smaller former house, and my husband stripped linoleum off the cool 1950s tile floors in that house, but in general we aren't DIY-ers at all. I'm in awe of people who really are.

Well, I thought I was a DIY Forget it! I would have run, hard and fast, from that place. Good for them for sticking with it. They deserve such a lovely house after working so hard for it.

Wait..... did she go to FUS? I have this feeling that I know her. We have a mutual FUS acquaintance, for sure.

Small world! I was so impressed when I read their story in the magazine, I dont know that I'd be able to clear out waist high garbage like that! But boy, the house looks marvelous now.
Actually, it was their story that inspired me to to go this week to knock on the door of a house I'd always loved.

The Philadelphia Inquirer just did a story about Mark and Katie and their lovely home here. In addition to elaborating on their story a bit, the article states that Mark and Katie's home will be featured on the cover of the magazine!!!
