I read my old copy of "Where the Wild Things Are" to my boys today.
Rest in Peace.
Love,

Although Where the Wild Things Are freaked me out as a child (sorry, monsters are scary!), I feel so very sad today. I am glad so many media outlets took the time to celebrate Mr. Sendak's many accomplishments and awards.
I've been praying for his soul today.

I read the news this morning. As an author our favorite is Chicken Soup With Rice and as an illustrator there are just so many. We are enjoying Little Bear books with my 7yo as his aloud reading practice.
Praying for the repose of his soul

The very first book I remember receiving and independently reading was "Little Bear". I still have it.
Praying for the repose of M. Sendak's soul.

So, since I hadn't heard the news earlier I had to go and read some of the online tributes. It referenced the book he had just published last year after many years without any recent publications - Bumble Ardy. I had seen in on a new publications list last fall but not read it. But in reading about it now, I found that it was inspired somewhat by this cartoon short Sendak did for Sesame Street in the 1970s. I so remember this short - anyone else? I has been MANY years since I saw that and was young and never connected it to Sendak.

I never connected it to Sendak, either! I remember that, although not as well as you do.
I didn't know much of Sendak except for Little Bear books, which I still love. I was always fascinated by the detail and realism in his drawings.
It's only as an adult with my own children (and thanks to this board) that I expanded my knowledge of his books. But we haven't read "Where the Wild Things Are". I didn't care for that one, and my boys have lots of irrational fears and I don't want to put one more image in their head.

I only heard this morning that he was considered controversial because his books showed children in adventure and unsupervised. Silly.

When I was young (which was before Sesame Street was even on? -I only remember watching Captain Kangaroo, The Friendly Giant, and Mr. Dressup!,) my mum had signed me up for a book club. I would get books every so often, and one of them was a Little Bear. I loved it! I still have all of the books from that club, and my boys have enjoyed them, tremendously, over the years. A couple of my boys always had to watch "Little Bear," when we found it on tv. But none of them cared for "Where the Wild Things Are."
