Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Please pray for my son (now 18) and the highschool he goes to. This is his senior year and the selection committee for commencement speaker chose someone to speak who is outwardly gay and has his picture posted with his fiancee (a male) on facebook. (Yes, this is a Catholic school.)   Seeing this, the principal said he could not speak.
The whole school is a mess. The students are rallying for this man to speak. My son was caught up in it as well. It started out as the students saying that it was not fair how this man was treated. But it quickly changed from a situation where a man was being defended for being treated unkindly, to a rally for gay rights. It has been very difficult for my son because this man happens to be the brother of one of his close friends. My son has always been taught to love all people, but that he doesn't have to embrace all lifestyles. He has been taught the teachings of the Church on this issue. But even the priest at the school does not seem to follow the Church's teaching here. The teachers are actually encouraging the students in this frenzy.
One of them even filmed her students for a YouTube video that has the students standing against homophobia.

The principal finally caved and called an assembly where, crying, he said he was sorry but he couldn't let this man speak. He blamed it on the Bishop. The Bishop sent out a statement later saying he knew nothing of this whole issue. So now we have a principal who has lied. Ugh! It's truly a mess.

My son, and the others at the school who are obedient to the church are in a difficult situation and need prayers for wisdom and courage!

I am praying. Such a difficult situation!

At least the principal has held his ground.

I hope that next year the principal is part of the selection committee from the beginning. Sigh.

Your son and his girlfriend are in my prayers in a special way at this very stressful time.

Dear Becky,

I heard about this on the radio just a few days ago! At that time, it was just the initial report, blaming the Bishop.

I am so sorry your son (and his girlfriend,) are experiencing all this turmoil at a time that is usually so much fun. Please pass on my prayers to them!!! And prayers for you; it's so hard being a mom watching all this unfold.

In Christ,

Just wanted to add that our pastor needs prayer too. He was on vacation while all this took place and he came home to a real mess. He is a very quiet man and I know this is going to be very hard for him to deal with. Angry parents who are rallying for something that is against the teaching of the church.

Becky, I really doubt this is true because there are probably sooo many others that won't speak out as well because they're afraid. It's sooo very hard to NOT get caught up in the frenzy and be the one that DOES speak out. I will pray for everyone involved. What a difficult situation.

You're right Kathryn. I've been feeling so down about all this I tend to blow things out of proportion. Yes, there are other kids at the school who will stand up for Church teaching if given the chance. Thank you for shining some light on this. I changed my original post.

What a tough situation! It would have been so much better if the selection committee was required to clear their choice with the principal and Bishop before announcing it. I will certainly pray for your son and all involved in this mess.

Sadly, so many Catholic schools no longer adhere to the teachings of the Church.
