Ladies, I was rereading your advice for my first induction with my daughter last November... and was so grateful all over again.
I'm up again for induction with our son (who is measuring 8 lbs 4 oz by sonogram at 36 weeks 4 days -- Yikes!) He will be induced when I am 37 weeks 3 days on the feast of St. Joseph the Worker.  No name yet. 
A couple of questions that I didn't ask previsouly for those who have been induced:
1. what did you eat the day before?
2. Have any of you used essential oils to help labor?
3. I seem to stall at five. Any stuck in bed positions that might help? Suspect posterior as I have back labor with all my kids. Once I can get past five, all systems are go. Not sure if I had an epidural if I would have relaxed more and got through it faster? hard to know.

hands and knees is supposed to help with posterior babies.. also with posterior babies I think you do have that "pause" with dilating because your uterus is working at turning the babies before full dilation.. so the hands and knees would help with that but don't think of it as "stall" think of it as the uterus is busy at other necessary things than just dilation.

This might sound a bit out of the ordinary, but so far the ladies who have tried said it worked.
Be sure to talk to the baby and let him know what is going on and what he should do.
The next thing is to gently push as you are contracting, as if to push out the baby. My sister was the most recent one who did this and she said the dilating went faster and she didn't have that "pause".

Good advice about the pushing gently during earlier ctx. I discovered that by accident, and it worked so well at keeping the ctx manageable.
Will you be in bed w/ an epidural, or just hooked to monitors? I was hooked up, but could sit on a birthing ball and rock a bit while rolling & opening the hips a bit. I tried to keep my upper body/belly more forward-leaning, to assist in turning (my first was posterior and I didn't want any repeats). Also, I could sit on it, and lean forward into the bed.
My inductions were post-term, so they went very fast. I didn't do anything special, other than lots of walking. IDK if you'd want to try acupuncture, acupressure, or massage w/ pressure points, but I've known people to have success w/ all three. Are they going to try ripening the cervix before starting the pit?

You might like Back Labor No More. She describes a specific technique for helping posterior babies by lifting up in the front and then gently pushing down. I'd sort of forgotten this with my last labor, and I wish I'd remembered

Thanks Laura for the gentle pushing advice! I've never tried that.
Christine, I'll be a little over 37 weeks and I'm a finger dilated... which means nothing until I'm 75% effaced -- which I'm not.  To start, I'll be hooked to two monitors and he won't let me out of bed until the baby's head is engaged -- which was 7 hours after the pitocin started with Marion. Then I sat on the birhting ball (but didn't try leaning forward!) until he made me get back in bed with an internal monitor because he was worried about my contractions not doing anything. I did try pressure points last time as I recall -- I feel like one in the middle of my hand??
I think I really have a hard time relaxing with back labor in bed. I work so much better up and around! Lindsay, the adbominal lift sounds like a good idea and thanks for the link. I'm going to print some of these positional suggestions!

Epidural work well for me ...most of the time It's like my body just relaxes and sometimes things move really fast until #8 I am talking 20 minutes to 1 hr the last one was more of a long drawn out adventure  labor was almost as long as the 1st but not nearly as exhausting as my 1st who was all natural. Epidurals work well for me too, I have to say. I have stalled each time at 5cm or so (I was induced with #1, but my labors since then have been similar). The epidural seems to allow my body to relax, and I begin dilating quite quickly, even with very few contractions--it is as if my contractions become much more effective. I will labor for hours--even days--to get to 5cm, and then a couple hours after the epidural, I'm at 10. My epidurals have all been on the light side--I have been able to feel the pressure of each contraction, move my legs (while remaining in bed), and push easily and well when the time comes. I know that for some women, the epidural can slow the labor down, so I'm sure it depends on your body and how it handles the medication, but it might be something to consider if you're open to that route at all.
ETA: I have only been induced once (with #1), so take my advice with a grain of salt. I know inductions can go quite differently than labors that start on their own.

That's odd that you couldn't be upright to let gravity help get the head lower. 7hrs sounds like you responded well to the process though. I felt so much more confident for my 2nd & 3rd inductions, knowing that the pitocin did indeed work for me. I used less and less each time.
Annie, that's so interesting that we had opposite experiences. Things went much faster and easier for me when I didn't have the epidural. Thank God for all the choices modern medicine provides!

To be perfectly honest, I have never had an epidural out of fear. "You're going to stick a long needle in my back during a contraction where it hurts the worst???" And the no guarantee thing that it will get my baby down and out?? Those are my issues.
If I could read the future and know that it would relax me and make my posterior baby turn, I would suck up my fear and do it in a heartbeat!
I did ask for it in the end, but thank goodness it was time to push! I'm not sure I could have endured a needle at that point!!
Again, thanks and thanks --- all the ideas help the fear and give me something productive to think about!

My first 2 were epidural free for that very reason. The fear but with number three I was exhausted and just couldn't get it together. God sent me the best nurse anethisist (sp?) who turned out to have the most positive influence on a labor that was going bad fast. No heart beat recording I thought I was pushing a dead baby  She was stuck in the corner and became my voice of reason in my ear I had a dr screaming for a c-section my midwife calmly stating the head is right there and in the end while I pushed the nurse anethesist jumped on the side of the bed and literally helped push him out. He was fine the probe was discontected  I took that as a sign epidurals are great and have enjoyed all labors since then -Annie

Is there any way you could get a doula? Your chances of having another lady there to help you with position and pain management would increase your chance of a vaginal birth greatly!
Moving often is a the best bet for moving a baby. Bouncing on a birthing ball or doing pelvic tilts (on hands and knees) or even squats can help get the baby in a better position.

If you can swing it, get the doula! It was nice to have somebody else do the thinking while I focused on labor. She was great at gently offering sips of water, holding my hand during contractions, planting positive statements in my head when I needed it he most , knowing when to suggest I switch positions, etc. She was an invaluable asset to my two home births.

I wanted to add that my grandfather weighed 12 pounds at birth! He was born in 1912 (I think) in the backwoods of Kentucky. I can't even imagine a 12 pound baby.

Sadly the high risk people don't do dualas or birth plans, so I'm just trying to work in the system! I'm sure I could raise a bigger fuss, but that's not my temperament -- and I'm appreciative of all the care they've given this far. If they take some of my suggestions, great -- if they ixnay them... then I'll try to make do. Their goal is healthy baby... but they are not used to moms who really liked their natural ways.

Oh you say two monitors.. is one internal? that would be the, very legitimate, reason you can't get up until the head is engaged. When you artifically break the bag of waters and the head is not engaged there's a higher risk of the cord coming out first which is a serious emergency.
You might ask if you could start with one monitor and try and get the head engaged before having the internal monitor added. Though the internal monitor is much more accurate and really a good thing for externally driven labor.

Thanks again ladies! Everything went much, much better the second time around!
Highlights (for those that might face inductions):
- 8:15 Pitocin administered.
- 9 am I pleasantly ask Doc to wait another hour before rupturing membranes.
- 10 am Doc breaks my water and the deluge of polyhydramnios comes out. He announces baby is engaged, so I can sit on birthing ball, but use bed pan. I'm okay with that. Baby is engaged. Station -2. 70 effaced. 2-3 dilated. Moving along better than Marion.
- 11:00 am After a little resting in bed, get on birthing ball all hooked up. Love birthing ball. Rocking, bouncing. slow, fast. It all felt like it was opening up the pelvis and helping him descend. Maybe too well. Lost heartbeat on monitor several times.
- 1 pm Dr. checks me, he puts me back in bed with an internal monitor. But now I'm 4 -5. However, in bed I'm starting to shake. Dan pumps up the heat, shaking goes away.
- Stay in bed on left side until 2:30 pm. We forgot tennis ball. But Dr. gave dh a bottle to rub all over my back for my back labor. I kid you not -- I love the counter pressure, but it's got to be HARD. So I'm bruised but so grateful b/c that made it manageable. Grateful for athletic dh who could be psycho on my back.
- 2:30 pm,I'm about to switch to all fours, but Dr. wants to check me. Of course, it's during a contraction (ouch!) but I'm 6 - 7. I'm off of the dreaded FIVE!!! (my stall number). I am determined if I relax and really focus, I can have this baby in an hour.
- 2:50 pm I decide to put the ball in the back of the bed (part that's raised), drape over it as I do all fours without pressure on my wrists (that stupid IV really hurts). This is great. I totally can relax over the ball and dh can still go psycho on my back. I followed advice here and talk myself through each contraction and tell him "Turn and go down, turn and go down." It helped me stay focused.
- 3:30, I start to gently push with each contraction. (Great advice!)
- 3:40 pm - After two contractions, I think, yep feeling like pushing! He checks me and says yes I'm fully dilated.
- Gets everything ready, contraction comes... and I can.not. get the head out with the first contraction!! This is a big head and I can't keep my chin down! Contraction #2 comes, first push. Head out. Thank goodness. Shoulders were a piece of work too. Can't remember if he was out with another contraction or just another push in that second contraction!
- He was born at 3:59 -- just inside the hour of mercy at 8lbs 4 oz.
And the next day we finally name him James Joseph. 
This was as close to a normal birth for me given the induction-- so I'm grateful for the suggestions. Being more relaxed the second time around and these position adjustments made it go much, much, much smoother. I never reached that desperate feeling!
