My son is being Confirmed tomorrow night. We are thrilled. Our diocese confirms children in second grade. I do not have any problem with that but most Confirmation gifts are geared toward teens. Any ideas for an 8yo? He'll be making his First Communion next month so he'll get the usual rosary, Bible, Child's Missal, etc. for that. I really want to make Confirmation special, but the temptation is to keep it low key and celebrate big for FHC. I just don't want him to think it's less important.

Our almost 8 year old has been wanting a pocket knife, and we are thinking of doing it for FHC this summer(we are not sure when confirmation will happen again in our parish). We are not in the scouts, but it is the age that they allow boys to earn their badge and carry a pocket knife. Whitting Chip
Anyway, not particularly spiritual, although, you could always make it symbolic of their age of responsibility related to their becoming a "soldier for Christ."

I love giving the San Damiano Crucifix. They sell ones that have a stand -- they can be put either on the wall or a stand. This is a large one but I've seen much smaller ones, too.
I would move the Bible to Confirmation, and give the missal for FHC. Or perhaps a small pocket version of the Gospel to have for daily readings. This one is organized by the year, so it has a reading for each day. Very nice to follow along.
The Ignatius Bible RSVCE is the one I gave to my 7 year old. He uses it on a regular basis.

My boys are about the same age and for Christmas I gave them all a Miraculous Medal on a chain. They seem to have really enjoyed them and wear them often.
I did a few of the medals in Pewter with stainless steel chain, one with Pewter medal and beaded chain and two in bronze with copper chains.
The medal vary in size from 1/2" to 1 1/4".
If you are interested in something like the pm and I could designs something up for you.

Thanks for the great ideas! I ended up getting him a St. Joseph medal (his patron saint) and the San Damiano Crucifix. He really likes St. Francis so I think he will appreciate the crucifix.
If I had more time Betsy, I would have definitely asked you to design something for me. This really snuck up on us! I think because it is so soon after Easter. Also, in our diocese they usually do Confirmation and First Communion on the same weekend. This year it is different because of the Bishop's schedule and it's throwing me all out of whack!
He's so excited for his Confirmation tonight! This is my son who has always said he wanted to be a priest, even though behaving at Mass is a huge issue for him. I am going to pray that he gets showered with extra graces!
ETA, Lindsay, a pocket knife will be just the thing for this boy's birthday that is coming up! He so wants to be in scouts, but we are having a difficult time finding a troop around here. Thanks for the great idea!

Becky,
Your choice's sound perfect! I am tring to fight the jelous bug that your son will be reciiving his sacraments in the "proper order".
I am praying and discerning now how and if to approach my Bishop to allow all of my older children to be confirmed at the same time. I just feel that they could really use the gifts of the HS even at these young ages to help grow in their faith!
God Bless, and you son will be in my prayers tonight!!!!!!!!!
