Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 7 year old does ok with narrations, overall. At first he complained a lot and would only give me a sentence, maybe two. Other times, he's shown me he's capable of a lot more. Once he recounted the entire tale of Red Riding Hood (from the Blue Fairy Book) to his friend as we were riding in the car - it was pretty impressive.

His best narrations right now are from Aesop's Fables. With these, I see what Charlotte Mason was talking about - the child's delight in telling. Yesterday he was getting really animated with the tale he was retelling me and then asked to read another. So I got my camera out and recorded his little narration. He loved it! He is a ham anyway, so he likes being the center of attention and he loved watching himself retell the tale. It was a lot of fun!

So if anyone has a little performer like mine, give them a chance to star in their own little movie and you might be surprised at how well they can narrate a story back to you!

That sounds like so much fun! We'll have to try that sometime

Of course, I always take things too far and make huge projects out of something very simple and effective BUT,...
I think this would be THE thing that helps my ds with narration! (Thanks for sharing Claire!) Recording his narrations and keeping them in a file on the computer would be so motivating for this kid!! I know I would constantly hear "Mom, can I watch my narration on the computer?", which would encourage him to do a better job each time.
Now, to replace my broken camera so I can actually give it a try!

Coming back to say this could even be part of an end of term wrap up. The computer file for term one could include this child doing various narrations, reciting memorized poetry, giving oral reports, etc. Oh the endless possibilities!

Related.. I recently read The Three Little Bears to my twin 3 1/2 year olds and then gently suggested the set up their little table with bears to be the characters, which turned into my 7 year old and 6 year old joining the action, setting up multiple scenes with chairs, their little table, their bedroom set up as the beds, and little boys holding giant bears and being fed lines by the big kids. Of course I got the whole thing on a series of videos on my camera. So cute. I just have to figure out how to edit it and share with our family across the state... :)

We do this too! My son especially likes to do it for his memory work. We record him reciting a poem or prayer and then email it to dad at work.

Great idea to try it for memory work also!
