Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Not a very joyous thing to commemorate, but I know my kids would love to learn more about the Titanic.

I found a Teacher's guide that includes some history, art, and science.

Some books that I have seen recommended for the younger crowd (I haven't personally read these yet - have any of you?):

Polar, the Titanic Bear
Titanicat
Inside the Titanic

Anyone have any other ideas?

Every Titanic forum I have visited really praises the 1997 A&E Documentary

Your oldest boy might enjoy that and for certain you and your husband will!

Oh, that's right - I've seen that before. That's a fascinating documentary! Thanks for reminding me. I couldn't remember whether it was A&E or the History Channel who had done it.

The latest issue of Boy's Life has a lot about the Titanic and the anniversary -- a fictionalized account by a Boy Scout character, plus a really interesting article on the finding of the wreck in the 1980s, which my 9yo found absolutely fascinating. So if you have Boy Scouts . . . there is that. I'm glad to have these other resources, so my son can follow his rabbit trail!

Glad you started a thread on this - had been thinking of this centennial and that it would be good to share study ideas.

Several years ago the Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition was here at our local museum. Very interesting. The link has the current exhibit schedule - in case it is close to any members. Currently in Las Vegas, Orlando, San Diego, Kansas City, & Houston. Opening soon in Detroit & Atlanta.

We have the (Unsinkable) Molly Brown House here in Denver. She lived here and so there is a lot of her history here. Molly Brown was Catholic and helped raise money for the building of the Cathedral here, which was completed in 1911 - the year before the Titanic. Anyone want to take a field trip, we will be happy to have you come our way...

Of the three picture books you listed, Monica, I really like Titanicat. It is very well done, nice illustrations. Based on a true story. The Inside the Titanic book is good too - a richly illustrated non-fiction. Would be enjoyed by anyone who likes cut-away illustrations. I am pretty sure I read the Polar Bear one when the exhibit was here, as the story sounds familiar but I'm not positive - it wasn't particular memorable to me if we did. We got quite few non-fiction juvenile books out then on the topic - I'll have to try to remember which ones we liked most.

This newer Don Brown picture book history is very good.
All Stations! Distress!: April 15, 1912: The Day the Titanic Sank . It's part of a series he is doing on US historical events. I've liked them all.

Mary....we just read a Molly Brown picture book a few months ago. Do you know the title off-hand? I'll go look for it, if you dont' know about it (which I just can't IMAGINE, btw! )

Was it The Heroine of the Titanic ? I think that is the only one I've read.

What about the 1964 Debbie Reynolds movie - The Unsinkable Molly Brown? I'm going to try to get it - maybe for a movie night for our group. I know it isn't exaclty historically accurate, but would be fun.
