I have decided to continue on with our unit study approach of taking a trip around the world for first grade. We will still have Europe, Asia, and Australia to do in first. I was wanting to add in a book on Famous Americans or something like that to be read maybe once or twice a week. I would just like something so that my son will start to become familiar with American history. I would love to hear your recommendations! I am also open to reading good books about different Americans as well. Thanks!

We are going to use Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans, too, along with the D'Aulaire biographies- George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Pocahontas, Ben Franklin, etc.

I second and third the above suggestions, and offer one more: James Baldwin wrote Four Great Americans, a book with four mini-biographies of Lincoln, Franklin, Washington, and Daniel Webster. But we've only read the first -Washington. My son read it and found it interesting.

I think we'll be doing Ambleside's suggestion of the D'Aulaire biographies also.
Since we're talking about first grade history: anyone follow Ambleside's suggestions for World History for 1st grade as well? They recommend the early British selections from An Island Story, Fifty Famous Stories, and Viking Tales.

Has anyone used this from SCM or this by Queen Homeschool?
BTW, I love the looks of Eggleston's book! It looks perfect. I also like the looks of the D'Aulaire books. I have read on other forums that they have racism. Has this been a problem for your kids or is it not as bad as people say?

You can read it online and review the TOC here. It is stories from the childhood of several famous people, mostly Americans. I haven't actually read it all  , but my 7.5 has read it more than once. It is one of his favorite history books.

On the lighter side, there are the Step-into Reading books about famous Americans, such as Thomas Jefferson's Feast
These focus on one aspect of each person's character- for TJ, it is his love of food and how he introduced new foods to America. They are short, colorful and fun.
What I like about these books is that they gave my kids an instant rapport with each famous person. They know Thomas Jefferson as the president who liked french fries and love apples. Whenever we come across him in other books, they feel they "know" him... what he liked to eat, his house, etc. They are not great lit, but they are a fun intro to famous people.
Other favorites here have been George Washington and the General's Dog and A Prairie Dog for Lewis and Clark.
I find my dc searching the bookshelves for these books to reread them.
