I decided to start a new topic since the dinnerware one had turned into tablecloths and then sewing.
So to start off...
I found a great site for patterns called Sew Baby. It has a couple of really easy polarfleece patterns for beginners. I have used the Easy Hats one to make six hats in about an hour. I also made ponchos with this one. Again two in an hour. I like quick projects.
These patterns are nice because they are real paper so it is easier to save and re-use.
I bought a few books too and I am using one to make some summer nightgowns and pjs for the girls.
Anyone else have any great sources or projects?

I do like the Sew Baby catalog. The woman who introduced me to it is the same who first really told me about the CM method of homeschooling.
Did you buy the sewing books at Sew Baby? I'd love to make some nightgowns for my dd. I've made pj's for both my children. I bought inexpensive plain white tshirts. I let them each pick a fabric (my dd picked horses and ds picked travel signs). I made elastic waist pj pants from a simplicity pattern and then appliqued a square of the same fabric to the front of the t-shirt. I made a friend of my dd's some of these and they do make great gifts!
Simplicity makes two good basics of sewing books. One is sewing for the home and the other is general sewing. One of the books helped me learn how to sew using cording on a duvet.

I forgot to ask if anyone has ever used the girls knit dress pattern from Sew Baby? It looks just like the LandsEnd dresses I just paid $19 for! My daughter loves these dresses and would love one for every day of the week!

I have to put in a plug for CHC's "Sewing with St. Anne" -- now this is a great learning to sew book that has some great projects in it. Easy stuff like scrunchies and a Mary Mantle to make for feast days.

That sounds like my speed! I've looked at this book before in their catalog. Maybe I should get it.
It cracks me up that my placemat question in the Dinnerware for a Large Family thread led to a sewing discussion. My mother would die laughing if she read it. She tried for years to get me to sew. She was an avid seamstress, even made her own wedding gown! And now in my older age I'm looking at sewing machines and sergers.

I used Simplicity 7043 which is kids elastic waist pants and tops. You could use any simple pants pattern. I like the ones with fewer pieces! This pattern had two pieces for the pants so it went together fairly quickly. I bought one size and just cut it shorter for my younger one and made the waist smaller.

I don't have that one, but I've used a lot of KwikSew patterns, esp. for kids, and they are way better than McCalls, Simplicity, etc. IMO. If you do a lot of basic sewing like pants, shorts, shirts, dresses, etc. you might want to look at the Kwik Sew Sewing for Kids (or there is one for toddlers and one for babies depending on your sizes). They have lots of interchangable pieces for the patterns and are a great bargain in the long run. I've made the dress shown in the picture using the KS book for toddlers for my dd. VERY EASY!
KS patterns are available from SewBaby and at Hancock's but not usually at Joann's. There are also co-ops online to buy KS patterns at a better price, esp. if you buy several.

p.s. An even simpler way to do cute dresses for young girls is to take a T shirt of any color/pattern and make a rectangle from cute woven fabric, sew the short ends together, gather the top edge and cut off the Tshirt at waistline, and sew the woven fabric to it as a skirt, then hem the bottom.

I did this for my boys at Christmas, using flannel for the jammie pants (again, I used my KwikSew Sewing for Children as the source) and bought some matching color Tshirts and appliqued a cutout of the fabric onto the shirts.

I'm pretty sure Walmart carries Kwik sew patterns as well. I remember seeing them there once.

Where do you buy GOOD cotton knit fabrics? I love lands ends dresses but they no longer make them in bigger girls sizes (not to mention they are costly to my poor neglected wallet). But I really like their fabric and wonder where to get such fabrics or good fabrics anyway! Any ideas?
And thanks for the sew baby link they have neat things! I really need to start sewing again! Just haven't had time.

I get regular emails from fabric.com. I've purchased once from them but it wasn't cotton knits. I don't know how their selection of cotton knit is, but it may be worth checking out. I saw some really cute knits recently at JoAnn's. I am going to buy that pattern for the knit dress from Sew Baby. I just bought my dd two lands end dresses. I agree that they are higher in price than I'd like to spend! Of course, I don't think they make that dress bigger than a size 8 and that's what she's currently wearing! I better get that pattern soon!

I got curious and just searched for fabric on google. Try fashion fabrics club. Go down the toolbar on the left and select Knit fabric. From there you can select cotton knit. I found a few lik set#J132 that looked kind of cute. I don't know what the quality is like but the price is about $5 a yard. FYI!
