Do you revisit artists down the road, after your children have already been introduced/exposed? We haven't done picture study yet - at least not really. We've looked at some art, but I'd like to start focusing on an artist for a time and look at different pieces, etc.
I am trying to decide on an artist to start with, and I find myself paralyzed with indecision. I should probably just pick someone and go with it, but then I wonder if I'll wish I would have saved that artist for another year - when my youngers are older and will participate, etc.
Do you revisit artists that you have already looked at, as your children get older and younger children begin participating in picture study?

Absolutely we revisit artists. In fact, you will find it will be necessary to revisit just about everything if you want to get the information firmly planted in your students' minds.
I pick our artists based on either the time period we are studying in history (this term we are working on the Spanish exploration of the Southwest in the 1600-1700's, so I picked a Spanish artist of the era, Velazquez. It helps that Simply Charlotte Mason has a picture kit for him!) or based on the geographical region (last term we studied the New England states and our artist was Norman Rockwell). I don't worry about how I'll feel later, just go with what seems interesting now. If you LOVE the artist so much that you want to study him/her later, well, do that, too!:)
Once you've introduced an artist, you will find numerous occasions to review his/her work. Also, in the middle school/high school years, you will probably want to do a general overview of the history of art and at that time will revisit these artists.
As far as the younger children are concerned, keep your materials and when they reach about 1st or 2nd grade, do the same study with them again. Your older child at this point can do more in-depth reading, research, a paper, or just a bit more study of the pictures themselves including trying to copy them or comparing them to another work by the same artist or another work on the same theme by a different artist.

I was worried about the same things as you and one day I just decided to jump in with both feet and it has become the highlight of our week. Right now is a great time to buy calendars at a very reduced rate. I just buy a calendar of an artist and pick about 6 pieces of art from the calendar. I laminate the picture so that my kid can touch it and spill apple juice on it. 
The first time, I will give them a brief biography of the artist (or we will read a book about the artist if we ever do an artist that has a short biography  ). I always place the picture upside down (some people cover it with a cloth or something) to increase the drama. Then I let the kids turn it over. I give them several minutes to just take in the piece of art and then we start discussing it (they usually start). They will start by telling me what they see in the painting and what they like or dislike about the painting. They will also tell me how it makes them feel. The painting we did last week of a nature scene made them feel "cold." I have them guess what the painting is called. Then we turn the painting over again and they "narrate" the painting back to me. They tell me what they remember about the painting and then we discuss some more. It all takes about 10-15 minutes, depending on the complexity of the painting and how much the kids are into it. When we are done, we tape the painting to the wall in our kitchen gallery. When we start a new artist, we will take these down.
We are almost done with our first 6-week picture study and I cannot even tell you how much my kids love it. It is seriously the highlight of the week. We started of with Mackenzie Thorpe. I thought his work would be really accessible to my kids. I have about 20 calendars so I really don't know where I am heading next!
BTW, I will definitely revisit most of these artist as the kids get older and better able to truly appreciate the artwork. Also, we will keep adding more kids to our homeschool if my husband lets me.

Absolutely!!!
It's like visiting an old friend!
Sometimes we do so in a planned way; and other times, its more organic. We'll see a calendar or a new coffee table book and decide to see more.
Another thing that has worked well here is to make a personal album for each child. They each have a simple photo album and after studying each artist, I ask them to pick a favorite work. I'll order a 4x6 print made of the selection and they add it to their album. It's fun to look back at all our "old friends!"

That album is a great idea - I have had similar thoughts swirling in my head. The more I think on it, the more I see a lot of notebooking in our future. An artist scrapbook came to my mind - I'll have to mull that one over more as well :).
