Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I found some old books in a box in the attic They shouldn't have been up there, but there they are. They have been up there for at least a year and of course it gets hot and a bit damp at times up there.

I am in the process of getting rid of any cardboard in the attic because I have seen silverfish.

Now..my questions:

1..If books have been up there a long while and I know I have seen silverfish up there, how do I know if a book has them or not?

2..Do I save books that have been brought up there, or would it be better to start over. I just found like 4 boxes of books. About 50% of them I would really like to keep. Some show cover warping from being stacked and heated...but nothing too severe.

3..If I have seen silverfish, there are bound to be more. How do I get rid of them?

4..Oh, yeah, I also found a box of binders...save or dump?

The ever ongoing saga of my house decluttering adventures...

Advice??
TIA!

Donna

1. Open and they run out.

2. I would keep if worthwhile and readable. Warping is still readable most of the time.

3.Not too sure but I'm sure there must be something

4. Are you going to use them? Keep if so. I use mine all the time.

What Erin said.

If you do see a silverfish, catch it in a tissue and flush it. Their egg cases need to be eliminated, and at a certain stage the egg case is still inside the body of the mother silverfish. Flushing is more "final" than tossing a tissue into the trash bin.

If you have a shelf full of books you haven't read in a while, it can't hurt to rearrange the shelf to disturb any potential silverfish. They are elusive; they hide under piles of clothes/fabric, etc. Moving things around will spook them out.

Take a hard look and cull what you really, really want to keep. If they "nice to have", put in another pile.

I was going to suggest baking the books, or freezing them to make sure you have no silverfish living in the books. That would be a bit time consuming, so that's why I suggested culling your boxes.

here are some suggestions.

And I also read to put Boric Acid for silverfish. You could probably do that in the attic without worrying about the kids.

And, like Nancy said, you need to check all your books and do some preventative maintenance.

But would I keep them? Yes, some of them. I had some boxes in my parents' attic which little mice visited and some weather affected them. I was brutally honest with myself about which ones to keep, cleaned up the remaining really well. I know I can never sell the books with tiny teeth marks, but the ones that remained were irreplaceable. It's only a few, though.
