Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are almost done with South America and are moving onto Africa next. I would love some recommendations of picture books or chapter books suited for early elementary! It can be about the countries or the animals that live there! Thanks so much!

Jan Brett has a book that takes place in Africa called Three Little Dassies. It is based on animals that live in Namibia, and she clothes the animals in African prints based on the style of dress in Namibia.
I read a book to my daughter called I Lost my Tooth in Africa. To the best i can remember it was good. Hopefully it didn't have anything anti-Christian in it, I can't remember.

Yes, The Three Little Dassies is a great Africa book - I'm partial to versions of "the three little pigs" of which this one.

Some old threads with recommendations:
I'm looking for some suggestions
An African Safari Trail

Homeschool Share has units based on these books:

Masai and I (Kenya and Tanzania)

When Africa was Home (Malawi)

Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears (western Africa)

The Day of Ahmed's Secret (Cairo)

Fatuma's New Cloth (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda)

Lake of the Big Snake (Nigeria)

My Rows and Piles of Coins (Tanzania)

Faraway Home (Ethiopia)

Honey, Honey, Lion! (Botswana)

Some of my favorites are here - I wrote the unit studies for Honey, Honey Lion and Fatuma's New Cloth.

Additional recommendations for Africa

Picture books:
Mama Panya's Pancakes (Julia Cairns)
One Hen (Katie Smith Milway)
Amadi's Snowman (Katia Novet Saint-lot)
Elisabeti's Doll (Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen) - looks like she has a series of books which follow this one - haven't read those, only the first

Early chapter:
Mogo's Flute (Hilda Van Stockum)

http://ebeth.typepad.com/serendipity/2009/05/continents-and- cultures-africa.html is an entire unit study on Africa with every resource you could possibly need. We did this a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it.

My little guys have enjoyed Jumbo's Lullaby by Laura Krauss Melmed. It's a nicely illustrated lullaby about African animals.
