Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do you know what Chaplets are?

I am curious, I make chaplets (full disclosure) and I am trying to approach this with sensitivity at my next conference.

I have been surprised in the last year how few people know what Chaplets are. Many do, don't get me wrong, but I have often hear the following comment, "I have been Catholic my whole life and I never heard of a Chaplet before?"

So, I wanted to ask you, Do you know what a Chaplet is?

When or how did you learn about Chaplets?

If I was to write an article about Chaplets what would you like learn more about?

Thanks! I look forward to the discussion!

what woud be most appealing to me is a short explaination along with the prayers used.. the way it's often done with the rosary.

the explaination isn't real useful if I'm still left wondering "but how exactly do you do that".

10 years ago I didn't know what a "decade" was - now, I knew what it was in relation to the rosary (a part of the rosary), but when a little girl told me she would like to pray a decade, I was thinking, "Huh!?" I didn't realize you could DO that!

I'm with Jodie - a brief description of WHAT it is, with perhaps a touch of history, then a nice diagram for how to pray it (like the rosary pamphlets with the outline of the rosary and arrows pointing to indicate what prayers to say and when).

If you have room, perhaps note a variation or two, so folks aren't thrown for a loop when they think they've got it understood and then they see a variation - this way, they will know that variations EXIST, making it easier to go with the flow.

I don't know what kinds Betsy makes but there are a variety of different chaplets with different numbers of beads and prayers to be said. So I guess a short explanation of chaplets in general and then a few examples or instructions for praying certain particular chaplets would be necessary.

I don't know when I first heard of chaplets. I know it wasn't until I was an adult. It may have been on Alice Cantrell's rosary website. The only chaplet I have ever prayed is the Divine Mercy chaplet...Actually, I knew of and prayed that one many years before finding Alice's site.

I'm a convert, and I don't know much about them. I know the Divine Mercy, but that's the extent of my knowledge. So, having an explanation and then examples would be ideal.

Also, what exactly is a decade? Do you just pray 10 Hail Mary's? Please forgive my newbie ignorance.

I have been Catholic my whole life, but I'm in the camp of not really knowing about them until I was an adult - and I'm pretty sure it came after I started homeschooling, from some local members. So it was definitely within those circles I became more familiar with current chaplets. I think we all grew up with the most common "chaplet" the rosary but not the term per se. If you look back at the Catholic Encyclopedia (1917) there is no entry on chaplets at all, as we refer to them today - just a mention in the praying with beads section. I would love to see what you have on the history - I've only read the piece on Alice C.'s blog that Janette mentioned. So am excited for your project. Would like to see it include the various chaplets that have special devotion and how those came about.

Thanks to everyone who replied so far. I am in the same camp as most. I didn't learn until an Adult about chaplets and I can't even really remember where or how I first heard of them.

I think that this aspect of chaplets is what makes them difficult to talk about. Each chaplet is specific to a saint, an attribute of Jesus or a title of Mary. The number of beads and the colors very based on who the chaplet is honoring. Most chaplets have their own personal history as well. There really isn't a one size fits all definition for a chaplet.

When ever I sell a chaplet I included a verbal description of the chaplet and how to pray it and any history if I know anything about it.

But I want to best understand how to teach people what a chaplet is. It is very valuable for me to hear how you came to know of chaplets. It also been interesting how that here and when I talk to others the Divine Mercy Chaplet is very well know (which is awesome, because it's so powerful!)

Thanks!
