Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am trying to plan out what I am going to use for next year. I am going to do ancients 3 days a week and American history 2 days a week and see how that goes! I am not in a rush so we will probably spend more than one calendar year on ancients (we school year round anyway). I love the RC history year 1 booklist. Are there any books on here that you didn't like that I could cut out? I have some other books I love as well. Plus, I have the Time Traveller book and a children's Bible so I don't need to purchase those. I would also love to hear any other books you love concerning ancients! I would also love any recommendations for very early American history. I think we will focus on the explorers next year (Leif the Lucky, etc). Thanks so much!

Watching this thread for ideas as well. I'm planning a similar course of study for second grade - RC History ancients and a brief overview of American History. We actually started reading This Country of Ours, very slowly, and as long as he's interested, we'll keep reading it as we go. At this point, I think that reading (and adding things to our timeline, that I have yet to make, LOL) will be all we do for American History. But I plan on following RC History pretty extensively next year.

In any case, I'm interested in people's opinions of the books as well :).

I just have a minute. I'll get back with more, but we are having a blast with year one. The one book that I dropped after reading two pages was The Story of Hercules. It was too advance in subject matter for my 7 yo and 4 yo. You might also want to preread the Favorite Greek Myths for the same reason. Those are really cheap Dover books anyway.

Also the book Founders of Freedom is pretty dry because it is actually a textbook from 1954. I just read through it with my 7 yo (just turned 8); we don't do the questions or test at the end of the chapters. Some of the information is obviously out of date in it as well. However, it is Catholic and I really like that.

I will look through all the books and see what kind of review I can give later. On our way out the door for co-op...

I purchased all of the beginner level and the next level (intermediate?) books for RC history 1 last year. In the end... I haven't used them at all yet. I decided to wait before going into an actual chronological study of history and to spend this year- second grade- reading through history TALES and practicing narration. So we did the James Baldwin books instead. Not that I am trying to discourage you! For us it was more about cementing those skills- attentive reading, retention, and narration- before starting to actually STUDY anything.

But I digress..... anyway.... my kids have really enjoyed just looking through some of the RC history booklist books. The "Spend the Day in..." series and anything by the D'Aulaires has been VERY well received. We are looking forward to delving into the bigger books next year or the year after when we are ready to start studying history.

One thing my son does LOVE is the Story of World 1 book and CDs. He regularly asks to just listen/read those for fun!

I would look through the Old Testament Days and Ancient Egyptians and Their Neighbors. These are primarily activity books, though they have good information as well, and we actually have not used them as much as I thought we would. The projects do not usually involve materials we have on hand (but that's just our house). I would recommend handling them in person before purchasing if possible.

Ditto Booksnbabes comment. Those activity books didn't happen... too many littles and not enough time to gather supplies.
