We are using the Handwriting Without Tears program, and I'm wondering if the hands on materials are helpful. We currently use the wooden capital letter pieces, but I am considering getting the roll a dough letters and the stamp and see screen. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Yes, we have used this program extensively here for my special needs son and his brothers have enjoyed it, too. I even attended the full day workshop on this program.

The hands-on aspects are very important. Not only do they reinforce the letter shapes and orientations, but they help develop fine motor skills necessary for writing. You could easily use Play-doh to roll out the letters. You would need to write a large letter on a piece of paper or cardstock for the child to cover with the dough rope at first. Then, they make the letters on their own. Anything like clay would work for this activity.

My boys loved the stamp and see screen, but this is more for fun than for fine motor development. If you can only purchase one of these activities, I'd get the roll a dough letters.

One addition we have used, and still use, are the small pencils that are sold in boxes of 100. They are like put-put gold pencils, only higher quality with erasers. They helped my son who wanted to hold his pencil with all of his fingers!

We have used it for the youngest three. I would highly recommend the magnetic screen.

My biggest thing though is that I needed to have both boys doing hands on so only one of the magnetic screens was tough. We eventually bought 3! Yes I know, why???? Well, we went step by step, with Mom being a guide and would build our letters. The boys loved it and learned so very quick.

Oh and we LOVE the CD sing along but that's because my house is just one big musical theatre stage

We love the Stamp and See screen. It's great. We often will take somewhere when we need to keep little hands occupied as well.

We roll out our own letters here. You can also use Wikki-Stix to form letters. My dd(5) loves doing that right now. I've been going thru a lot of Wikki-Stix!

That's a great idea, Anita! Wikki-Stix! We like Wikki-Stix a lot. I think I'll set these out in the writing area today as I freshen our shelves! Thanks for sharing that idea!
